PARIS.- This exhibition showcases the heterogeneity of French from the motif or from nature drawing in the first half of the 19th century, with a particular focus on leading figures of French art (Delacroix, Corot, Chassériau, Valenciennes and Daubigny), as well as lesser-known individuals such as the engraver Bléry. Organized with special support from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the cooperation of the Musée dOrsay, the exhibition puts on display over 100 drawings and etchings, and some thirty sketchbooksthe plein-air painters quintessential tool. LONDON.- Having achieved a fundraising target of £1.98m, National Museums Scotland has acquired the Galloway Hoard on behalf of the nation and can now begin vital conservation work on this striking collection of Viking-age objects. Discovered in Dumfries and Galloway by a metal detectorist in 2014, the Galloway Hoard consists of more than 100 pieces of gold, silver and jewelled treasure including ingots, arm-rings and brooches and some particularly striking items such as a gold pin in the shape of a bird and a decorated silver-gilt cup of Continental or Byzantine origin. The hoard is unique in bringing together a remarkable variety of objects in one discovery, hinting at hitherto unknown connections between people across Europe and beyond. FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA.- NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale presents Frank Stella: Experiment and Change, an exhibition that spans the artists 60-year career from the late 1950s to the present. Still too little understood outside the region itself, the artistic legacy of the worlds first Socialist Republic is slowly gaining wider international recognition thanks to a number of ambitious exhibitions this year. The book by curator Doris Wintgens is an ode to the two friends Peggy Guggenheim and Nelly van Doesburg, and describes their efforts to bring De Stijl to the attention of the world as an artistic movement. PHILADELPHIA, PA.- On Tuesday, Freemans Modern & Contemporary Art auction totaled over $2.1 million and was led by an auction record-breaking draped canvas painting by artist Sam Gilliam (American b. 1933). The highly anticipated Idylls I skyrocketed past its presale high estimate of $80,000, ultimately selling for $370,000 to one of the 17 phone bidders enthusiastically competing for the lot. The auction included two important paintings by Gilliam, both of which came from the same private collection. The two works generated considerable pre-sale interest, and the excitement in the sale room leading up to the back-to-back lots was palpable. LODZ (AFP).- Under a massive glass roof, the ultramodern new train station in Lodz, a central city in Poland, already appears ready to welcome visitors for a 2022 international expo that the former textile capital dreams of hosting. The station will form the new heart of the rapidly changing city, which gradually lost its lustre after years of grandeur at the end of the 19th-century. Lodz hit hard times after communism fell and dozens of fabric factories closed. By the early 1990s, more than 20 percent of the population was unemployed and the city began to empty. NEW BRITAIN, CONN.- The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is providing temporary safe harbor for Congregation Beth Els granite and bronze sculpture, Menorah, while they relocate to a new building after having recently closed on the transfer of the synagogue to LEARN, the Regional Educational Service Center. Originally commissioned in 1994 by Rena Linder to commemorate the life of her daughter, Kathryn Linder Ecochard, who succumbed to cancer, the large Menorah, approximately 61 inches wide, had stood near the entrance of Temple Beth El since its creation by the local and much celebrated sculptor, David Smalley. Rena Linder, a past president of the congregation arranged for the relocation in consultation with the Lyman Allyn. LONDON.- Bonhams Fine Chinese Art sale at New Bond Street London on 9 November made £11,971,313, the highest total for an Asian art auction in London this week. Leading the Bonhams sale was a set of four Huanghuali Folding Chairs that achieved £5,296,250, winning the accolade for the most valuable Asian work of art to be sold this week in London. The folding chairs appear to be the only known version of this form and type, and are widely considered a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty furniture. They had been estimated at £150,000 - 200,000.
