The sale presents design that has transformed the way we use living spaces while questioning where we draw the line between fine art and furniture and decorative objects. Furniture by George Nakashima (1905-1990) is renowned for its organic forms that incorporate the natural unfinished edge of the wood plank, as seen in two chests of drawers in the sale (est. each $30,000-50,000). Often chosen in consultation with his clients, the wood used by the Nakashima retains the expressiveness found in the graining and imperfections of each plank. Pirelli: 2018 calendar by Tim Walker unveiled in New York | | Freeman's Modern & Contemporary Art Auction sets auction record | | Louvre Abu Dhabi draws crowd as diverse as UAE | Duckie Thot. NEW YORK, NY.- The Pirelli 2018 Calendar by Tim Walker was presented yesterday at the Manhattan Center in New York. For the 45th Calendar edition, shot in London last May, the British photographer applied his unmistakable style of extravagant sets and romantic motifs, to revisit one of the classic stories of British literature: " Alices Adventures in Wonderland ". His inspiration came not only from Lewis Carrolls fantastic story, but most importantly from the illustrations that Carroll himself had entrusted to John Tenniel for the first edition of 1865. In Tim Walkers 2018 Pirelli Calendar they become 28 shots consisting of 20 different and extraordinary sets for a new unique Wonderland. Alice has been told so many times, Tim Walker said, and I think I wanted to go back to the genesis of the imagination behind Lewis Carroll so that you could tell it from the very beginning again. I wanted to find a different and original angle. In order to convey his idea o ... More | | Sam Gilliam (American b. 1933), Idylls I. Sold for $370,000. PHILADELPHIA, PA.- On Tuesday, Freemans Modern & Contemporary Art auction totaled over $2.1 million and was led by an auction record-breaking draped canvas painting by artist Sam Gilliam (American b. 1933). The highly anticipated Idylls I skyrocketed past its presale high estimate of $80,000, ultimately selling for $370,000 to one of the 17 phone bidders enthusiastically competing for the lot. The auction included two important paintings by Gilliam, both of which came from the same private collection. The two works generated considerable pre-sale interest, and the excitement in the sale room leading up to the back-to-back lots was palpable. When the first of the two lots - EAST II, a fine example of the artists beveled-edge paintings - came up for sale, 12 phone bidders stood at attention, eagerly waiting for Freemans Chairman, Alasdair Nichol, to open the lot. More News | A changing Polish city dreams of Expo 2022 LODZ (AFP).- Under a massive glass roof, the ultramodern new train station in Lodz, a central city in Poland, already appears ready to welcome visitors for a 2022 international expo that the former textile capital dreams of hosting. The station will form the new heart of the rapidly changing city, which gradually lost its lustre after years of grandeur at the end of the 19th-century. Lodz hit hard times after communism fell and dozens of fabric factories closed. By the early 1990s, more than 20 percent of the population was unemployed and the city began to empty. Last year there were 696,000 residents, down from 854,000 in 1988. Now Lodz wants to renew itself. It selected "City Re:Invented" as its theme for the Specialised Expo 2022/23, which is like a smaller World Expo that showcases a precise challenge facing humanity. "At the Expo, we want to talk about how you can ... More Gallery NAGA opens solo exhibitions of works by George Nick and Andy Buck BOSTON, MASS.- Each morning, while the rest of us are rolling out of bed and rubbing our eyes, George Nick is already on his way to a painting site, sometimes traveling an hour and a half to reach it. He sets up his easel and makes the most of the early morning light. He heads back after lunch, only to work on still lifes in his studio. The next day is like the preceding one, and on and on. Painting is hard work for Nick and hed have it no other way. If hes figured it out, hes already moved on; the moment something has become formulaic, he turns to a new challenge. Its a mantra we hear every time we visit the studio. This is hard work, Nick remarks. I wrestled with this painting for months. If I figure it out after one go or after eighty goes, Im happy. You see this new tone? Its almost right. After 90 years of life he still struggles with each painting. Nicks 11th solo exhibition at ... More Ayyam Gallery Dubai opens "Cities" presenting Kais Salman's newest paintings DUBAI.- In his older works, Kais Salman utilises satire to subvert the normalisation of greed, vanity, and ideological extremism that is rapidly defining our era. Seeking to confront and exorcise sociocultural manifestations of such depravity, Salman taps into ugliness and abjection through intentionally hyperbolised imagery accentuated by punches of colour and aestheticised forms. In his latest series, the artist takes these forms and explores their abstraction, in search of new compositions. Drawing upon folktales, epics, and myths, Salman creates alternate realities in which the characters he introduces, sometimes seen lined side by side, make up the basis of these worlds or cities. Introducing more figures than in his older works, each takes on an interdependent role, playing a part in the collective consciousness of a place and the work. The artist explores the roles ...
