The Director of Earth Science Museum Diogenes de Almeida Campos shows the biggest piece of fossil of a dinosaur's neck, collected in 1953 by the Brazilian paleontologist Llewellyn Ivor Price at Earth Science Museum in Rio de Janeiro on October 6, 2016. The dinosaur newly named Austroposeidon Magnificus was about 25 meters long and the largest among 9 species discovered in Brazil. YASUYOSHI CHIBA / AFP. by Sebastian Smith RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP).- Brazil just found its biggest ever dinosaur -- in a storage cupboard. In its prime, more than 66 million years ago, this long necked herbivore was 25 meters (82 feet) long -- longer than an articulated bus -- and could chomp through trees at a terrifying rate. By the time the creature was found by renowned Brazilian paleontologist Llewellyn Ivor Price in 1953, only a few hefty, fossilized bits of the spine remained. Researchers knew immediately they'd stumbled on something big. They didn't have the staff or resources to figure out how big, however, so the dinosaur pieces languished the next six decades in storage at Rio's ornate Museum of Earth Sciences. Until now. The remains of what has been named "Austroposeidon magnificus," and pronounced Brazil's biggest dinosaur, went on general public view for the first time Thursday. ... More |

Oil on canvas, 314.4 x 174.4 cm. Museo Nacional del Prado © Museo Nacional del Prado. LONDON.- Exhibited in the UK for the first time, 'The Adoration of the Shepherds' and 'The Adoration of the Kings' are on display in Room 1 of the National Gallery this autumn and through the Christmas period. The loan of these two remarkable paintings from the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid provides a rare opportunity to present the work of the Spanish painter Fray Juan Bautista MaÃno, an artist of exceptional talent whose name remains largely unfamiliar outside Spain. MaÃnos Adorations: Heaven on Earth coincide with Beyond Caravaggio, opening on 12 October; the first major exhibition in the UK to explore the influence of Caravaggio on the art of his contemporaries and followers. MaÃnos two Adorations are highly significant in the context of Caravaggios extended influence across Europe. By the age of 23, MaÃno ... Photo: Bundesarchiv/wikipedia.org. EDINBURGH (AFP).- The first biography of Adolf Hitler which presented him as "Germany's saviour" and compared him to Jesus may have been written by the future dictator himself, a Scottish historian has claimed. "Adolf Hitler: Sein Leben und seine Reden (Adolf Hitler: His Life and his Speeches)" was the first major profile of Hitler and appeared in 1923, authored by Victor von Koerber. Historian Thomas Weber, from Aberdeen University, has unearthed documents in a South African archive which indicates the book was "almost certainly" written by Hitler himself as a "shameless but clever act of self-promotion". "The book, which also includes a collection of Hitlers speeches, makes some outlandish claims arguing that it should become 'the new bible of today' and uses terms such as 'holy' and 'deliverance', comparing Hitler ... The museum has invited 12 Norwegian and international artists who in various ways deal with this subject matter. There are several reasons for choosing this theme. Children and young people are an important focal group of the museum, at the same time as we as a society have never focused as intensively as we do now on this segment of the population. The exhibition nevertheless has a universally human theme to which everyone can relate. The title Underway signals that at the core of the theme are different forms of change, development and transformation. The transition from childhood to adolescence happens in a short time and involves both physical and mental changes. But this is not an exhibition about ...
