Fifteen pupils from the Spinoza Lyceum in Amsterdam got a very exceptional history lesson today - from no less a personage than Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands. They were the first visitors to the Rijksmuseums new exhibition 80 Years War. The Birth of the Netherlands. Himself an historian, Mr Rutte accompanied the children on their trip 450 years back in time. AMSTERDAM.- This year is the 450th anniversary of the outbreak of the Eighty Years War, and to mark the event the Rijksmuseum is holding an exhibition entitled '80 Years War. The Birth of the Netherlands'. From 12 October 2018 to 20 January 2019, satirical cartoons, items of clothing, weapons and paintings by Bruegel, Rubens and Ter Borch will be our eyewitnesses, telling the story of how the Dutch nation was born. In a contemporary exhibition created by the Flemish stage designer Roel van Berckelaer, the Rijksmuseum shows how the 80 Years War changed and shaped the Netherlands, and how this conflict gave the southern Netherlands, now Belgium, a distinct character. 80 Years War is the first major exhibition to encompass the entire conflict and place it in its international context. It raises many issues such as religious freedom, self-determination, terror and persecution that remain highly to ... More |

NEW YORK, NY.- This morning in Sothebys New York salesroom, two exceptional bottles of wine each broke the prior world auction record for a single bottle of wine of any size. The two bottles of Romanée Conti 1945 shattered the previous record when they sold to applause for $558,000 and $496,000, respectively. The wines were offered as part of a 'white-glove' (100% sold) auction of rare Domaine de la Romanée-Conti emerging from the personal cellar of Robert Drouhin, which totaled $7.3 million more than five times its high estimate. Immediately following the conclusion of the Personal Cellar of Robert Drouhin, The Macallan 1926 60 Years Old (Sir Peter Blake Label) sold for $843,200 the highest price in Sothebys history for a single spirit, as well as the top auction price for any spirit sold in North America. Their new body of sculptural works continues the artists ongoing interest in how we interact with spatial contexts. As we learn from the review by Abbot Luigi Malvezzi, Milan restorer and collector, the first consists of a kind little girl who makes the first offer, and this statue should be praised for the finiteness, the elegance of the forms and the ingenuity that communicates (Malvezzi 1842a). More Collezione Maramotti opens Field by Phoebe Unwin, the first solo exhibition in Italy of the English painter REGGIO EMILIA.- Collezione Maramotti presents Field, the first solo exhibition in Italy by English artist Phoebe Unwin, featuring a series of new paintings made specifically for its Pattern Room. The title of the show holds many different connotations. The field could be a landscape, but also a colour field, or the field of vision. It is an in-between place, a traditional subject in painting, which allows the artist to hover between figuration and abstraction, to investigate the formal aspects of her medium. Investigating the concept of landscape and how the human figure interacts with its surroundings, Unwin uses painting to construct a delicate alternation of horizons, whose varying distances elicit different paces of observation. The layered, porous surface of her works and hazy depiction of her subjects also generate a dynamic kind of vision within each painting, ... More Chalton Gallery exhibits Yoshua Okón's early and latest film installations LONDON.- The exhibition presents Yoshua Okón's early and latest film installations. Focusing on absurd political and social aspects of the North American region, the artist points to the interconnection of transnational phenomena, such as disproportionate consumption, rampant dispossession, and blind nationalism. Okón challenges the boundaries between artificiality and reality by using reenactment as narrative technique, in order to exasperate social dysfunctions. Experiencing this exhibition at Chalton Gallery as an installation of three moving image works, the visitor witnesses a non-linear world. The presented works lie between social performance and simulation, constantly enacting and re-enacting an uncertainty towards what is both seen and unseen.
