Bartolomé Bermejo's visual universe shown in all its splendor for the very first time

MADRID.- Room C in the Jerónimos Building at the Museo del Prado is hosting the staging of this exhibition, curated by Joan Molina, a lecturer at the Universitat de Girona. The exhibition seeks to pay well-deserved homage to Bartolomé de Cárdenas, alias El Bermejo (1440-1501), one of the most suggestive and attractive painters of the fifteenth century, by presenting his work to the general public. Bermejo’s work exploits the pictorial potential of oil painting techniques, a new development at the time. In this respect, he created a personal realist language, one that focused especially on illusionist effects and on the definition of spectacular ranges of color. His main point of reference consisted of Flemish painting, the school inaugurated by Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, which, by the latter half of the fifteenth century, had seduced the whole of Europe, including Italy. Although it has been speculated that Bermejo ... More

Exhibition offers a multifaceted insight into Max Beckmann's artistic oeuvre   An important private collection to be sold to benefit a charitable foundation   Ingleby Gallery opens largest exhibition of Andrew Cranston's work to date

Max Beckmann, Selbstbildnis in der Bar, 1942. Öl auf Leinwand, 90 x 70 cm © Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Nationalgalerie / Andres Kilger © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2018.

BERLIN.- In March 2018 the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin received a generous bequest from art historian Barbara Malwine Auguste Göpel (1922–2017), consisting of two paintings, 46 drawings and 52 prints by Max Beckmann along with a painting by Hans Purrmann. The works that have entered the collections of the Nationalgalerie and the Kupferstichkabinett are now being presented to the public for the very first time in a special exhibition. The show also addresses the provenance of the works which were acquired in the 1940s and 1950s by Barbara Göpel’s husband, the art historian Dr. Erhard Göpel, who died in 1966. The bequest of Barbara Göpel represents a significant addition to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s collection of classical modernist works, and makes possible a multifaceted insight into Max Beckmann’s (1884–1950) artistic oeuvre. The 46 drawings, for example, provide an almost ... More

Andrew Cranston, Girl and dog, 2018. Distemper on hardback book cover, 28.2 x 22 cm. Private collection. Photo: John McKenzie Courtesy of the Artist and Ingleby, Edinburgh.

EDINBURGH.- Andrew Cranston once described himself as a storyteller of sorts, though without a clear story to tell. He draws on a variety of sources including personal recollections – family histories; his circuitous route to art school via an initial, unsuccessful, foray into carpentry; and his 25-year association as both student and lecturer at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. Interwoven with passages culled from literature, anecdotes, jokes, and images from cinema these elements combine to make his idiosyncratic, intimate, and often dream-like, paintings. These moments or ‘pockets of history’ - as Cranston puts it - are woven together with an extensive knowledge and curiosity regarding the history and process of painting. The resulting images may at once nod to Becket or Brueghel; reference the words of James Joyce or the graphic line of Toulouse Lautrec; or recall the intense interiors of Vuillard, Bonnard or David Lynch. ... NEW YORK, NY.- Luhring Augustine is presenting an exhibition of works on paper by Zarina, marking her third solo presentation with the gallery. Zarina’s fascination with paper has been the mainspring of her long-standing career as a printmaker and sculptor. Her elegant compositions are characterized by an affinity towards minimalism and geometric abstraction, shaped in part by an early interest in mathematics and architecture. While she employs a variety of printmaking techniques, including woodcut, silkscreen, lithography, and etching, her treatment of paper extends beyond the mere impression of text or imagery and into the recording of actions. Zarina cuts, sews, punctures, and collages paper in an ongoing effort to explore its material possibilities. The exhibition brings together collages from the past decade ... More

In the same way that Philip Guston inadvertently killed the notion of schools of art by switching styles and thereby defying easy categorization, perhaps a new generation of painters is helping erase the bias of geography. Isn’t there something old-fashioned or reductive in qualifying works as Western versus Eastern? Going home: 1973 BMW returns to Williams BMW Group 45 years after they sold it
LONDON.- This BMW was snapped up by Williams BMW Group, at the recent H&H Classics sale at Duxford on October 17, taking the car back to its roots for a total restoration. The connection happened thanks to Iain Burt who formerly worked at Williams BMW and now is Head of Operations at H&H Classics. He realised that the car would be of interest to Williams BMW Group as it was originally supplied by them in the early 1970’s. He emailed the Directors to say it was in the sale and they dispatched their Group Buyer, Adam Kirkpatrick to view it at Warrington pre-sale. Once he had seen it he was very keen to acquire the car as it was complete with all of the original dealer paperwork right down to a business card. Adam attended the sale at Duxford and became the successful bidder. So now it has been repatriated to Williams BMW Group after 45 years and they ... More

CUE Art Foundation opens a solo exhibition by James Yakimicki
NEW YORK, NY.- CUE Art Foundation is presenting a solo exhibition by James Yakimicki, curated by Gregory Amenoff. Titled Knitty Griddy, the exhibition of 8 large-scale oil paintings and several drawings presents both a natural and drone-like vision of the world, mediated through nature, civilization, and technological apparatuses. Yakimicki’s compositions are intricate networks of information, layered and maze-like. Soft palettes belie an underlying anxiety and a claustrophobic solidity of composition. Humans and machines are woven together in a stitched accumulation of marks, creating worlds both welcoming and foreboding. Without concern for traditional scale or perspective, Yakimicki portrays landscapes packed so densely they seem to be on the brink of collapse. Time is unfolding simultaneously throughout these compositions – either as a narrative ... More

Atul Dodiya's first Parisian exhibition in five years opens at Galerie Templon
PARIS.- Galerie Templon is presenting work by the pioneer of Indian contemporary art, Atul Dodiya, in his first Parisian exhibition in five years. The artist has devised a brand new exhibition centering on the painter Morandi and celebrating the beauty of a world haunted by the fear of loss. The show features a series of new hybrid works: paintings, installations and cabinets of curiosities. A dialogue from Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita acts as the springboard for the exhibition: during a party in a room dominated by a painting by Giorgio Morandi, the host expresses his fascination for the painter's sense of calm and the beauty of the composition, before revealing the anguish he feels when contemplating this apparent serenity: ‘Peace frightens me. Perhaps I fear it most of all. I feel it's only a facade, hiding the face of hell.’ This tension between a sense of wonderment ... More

Metro Pictures presents a selection of new work by Berlin-based artist Nina Beier
NEW YORK, NY.- Metro Pictures presents a selection of new work by Berlin-based artist Nina Beier in her second exhibition at the gallery. Beier’s work unfolds the histories enmeshed with serially produced objects and materials. She is drawn to those that have continually mutated and evolved as a result of transcultural exchange, reflecting on the fluctuating value assigned to them throughout the world at different times in history. The artist’s work offers space to contemplate the many and divergent meanings embedded and projected onto these objects. For example, her sculptural arrangements equally consider the cigar as handmade object, historically traded good, and symbol of power; they exist between an object, its representation, and our interpretation of it.
