NEW YORK, NY.- As a nod to Halloween, Beth Meyer, who owns a rock and crystal store in North Fort Myers, Florida, placed a human skull inside a glass display case there and surrounded it with quartz towers and other crystals. But Meyer, 62, who meant to use the skull only as a conversation piece and did not really want to part with it, put a really high price on it: $4,000. Still, the skull drew attention to her store, Elemental Arts, in the Paradise Vintage Market. On Saturday morning, while Meyer was unpacking vintage clothing and high-end glassware at the store, a deputy with the Lee County Sheriffs Office came in to question her about the skull. LONDON.- On a recent afternoon, in a ground-floor retail unit in one of Londons many vacant office buildings, a pair of flame-red platform heel boots with what looked like tentacles growing out of them and a multimedia sculpture of a coffin-like object circled by plastic shark fins were on show. Im against empty space, said Camilla Cole, the founder of Hypha Studios, a London-based nonprofit that persuades commercial landlords to let artists work and exhibit for free in unoccupied stores and offices. Cole had organized MELT, a group exhibition showcasing works by 32 recognition-hungry artists who work with Hypha and a fellow studio provider, Creative Land Trust. NEW YORK, NY.- More than 20 people have reported burning eye pain and vision problems after attending a party for NFT owners in Hong Kong last weekend, the organizers said Tuesday. The gathering was part of ApeFest, a three-day event hosted by Bored Ape Yacht Club, a group of cryptocurrency enthusiasts who own unique digital images of primates that cost tens of thousands of dollars apiece. Yuga Labs, the parent company of Bored Ape Yacht Club, is in contact with 22 people who had eye problems after the event, said Louise Conroy, a spokesperson for the company. PARIS.- American artist Gregory Crewdson is unveiling his latest work in Paris this autumn with Eveningside, a series of black-and-white pieces created between 2021 and 2022. This final instalment in a trilogy he has been working on since 2012 features twenty panoramic photographs characterised by their disturbing clarity and twilight mood. A pioneer of large-scale photography, Gregory Crewdson has been developing a unique photographic language over the last thirty years. NEW YORK, NY.- In a crisp white gallery space on Great Jones Street, in Manhattans East Village, a large wooden box contains a meticulous mise-en-scène: a midcentury roadside motel room constructed at puppet scale, which means its half of human scale. Standing on a step built into the outside of the box, spectators can gaze down into the installation, a time-capsule environment called Motel, by master puppet artist Dan Hurlin. It has just one puppet inside a motionless woman in an armchair in the corner, dressed with almost ostentatious modesty, one dark strand of hair hanging loose from her ponytail, a crucifix dangling from the chain around her neck. Flashback On a day like today, Swiss photographer Robert Frank was born November 09, 1924. Robert Frank (November 9, 1924 - September 9, 2019) was a Swiss photographer and documentary filmmaker, who became an American binational. His most notable work, the 1958 book titled The Americans, earned Frank comparisons to a modern-day de Tocqueville for his fresh and nuanced outsider's view of American society. Critic Sean O'Hagan, writing in The Guardian in 2014, said The Americans "changed the nature of photography, what it could say and how it could say it. [ ... ] it remains perhaps the most influential photography book of the 20th century." Frank later expanded into film and video and experimented with manipulating photographs and photomontage.
