SCRANTON, PA.- The first burglary was in 1999 at Keystone College in Factoryville, Pennsylvania. The Everhart Museum in Scranton was next, six years later. An Andy Warhol silk-screen print and a painting attributed to Jackson Pollock were taken. Then the pace picked up. The Space Farms: Zoo & Museum. The Lackawanna Historical Society. Ringwood Manor. The Sterling Hill Mining Museum. The United States Golf Association Museum and Library. The list goes on. Exhibition of recent paintings by John Newsom on view at MARC STRAUS
NEW YORK, NY.- MARC STRAUS is presenting BEASTS, an exhibition of recent paintings by John Newsom. In this latest series, the artist merges the repetition, patterning and iconography of Pop Art with the surfaces, allover painting and heroism of Abstract Expressionism. In the 1973 film Enter the Dragon, Bruce Lee steps into a room of mirrors for arguably its most iconic fight scene. It is then that the teacher’s spiritual guidance reemerges: “The enemy has only images and illusions behind which he hides his true motives. Destroy the image and you will break the enemy.” And for Newsom, the enemy is a programmatic adherence to either representation or abstraction, which is a painterly line that he carefully balances. With lifelike rendering and expressionistic impasto, the artist employs the leopard as an ancient motif whose rosettes visually ... More

Honor Fraser opens a group exhibition that surveys the liberatory affordances of sex
LOS ANGELES, CA.- Honor Fraser is presenting Erotic Codex, a group exhibition that surveys the liberatory affordances of sex, and the erotic devices that artists use to harness power in an evolving digital landscape. Featuring fifteen artists who embrace the body as a site for rupture, rapture, and reconciliation, the exhibition asks how emerging technologies reconfigure cultural norms around sex, just as they shape the political impact of sexuality at home and in public. In turn, Erotic Codex illuminates the entangled ways that we understand intimacy, artificiality, and our own bodies through the prolonged relationships we share with the technological objects at hand. Cocurators Alice Scope and Jamison Edgar arouse influential essays by Audre Lorde, Legacy Russell, and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha to examine the fantasies our erratic ... More

Casey Benjamin, free-spirited saxophonist, dies at 45
NEW YORK, NY.- Casey Benjamin, who brought colorfully expansive saxophone flourishes to the Grammy-winning Robert Glasper Experiment and added rich layers of texture to recordings by Solange, A Tribe Called Quest and many others, died March 30 in Maryland. He was 45. The cause was pulmonary thromboembolism, his brother, Kevin Benjamin, said. He did not say where in Maryland Benjamin died. Known for his willingness to experiment, his exuberant stage persona and his trademark swirl of locs, often streaked with teal or red, Benjamin was a founding member of pianist Robert Glasper’s combo, which, critic Nate Chinen wrote in The New York Times in 2012, “specializes in deep, immersive grooves, ... Exhibition of new paintings by Taylor Chapin opens at Quint Gallery
SAN DIEGO, CALIF.- Quint Gallery is presenting Tip Toe, an exhibition of new paintings by Taylor Chapin. This is the artist’s second show with the gallery, following a 2023 presentation of her painting Rest Assured, You Are In Good Hands at ONE. These new oil paintings resonate with Chapin’s surreal style of patterning and further develop her interest in modes of figuration. Through the poses of her sitters, each fully concealed by checked and striped fabrics, she navigates collective human sentiments in life-sized scale and manufactures a limbo in which they all reside. In her simulated realities, Chapin’s faceless figures emerge from prismatic interlocking waves in contradicting or mirrored formats. A central body often appears self-assured, pensive, and at times seductive, while transparent doubles float adjacent in space in physical and ... More

On a day like today, English photographer Eadweard Muybridge was born
April 09, 1830. Eadweard Muybridge (9 April 1830 - 8 May 1904, born Edward James Muggeridge) was an English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion, and early work in motion-picture projection. He adopted the first name Eadweard as the original Anglo-Saxon form of Edward, and the surname Muybridge believing it to be similarly archaic.
