| One of the best Delftware collections of the past decades at TEFAF Maastricht | |
Bird tureens. AMSTERDAM.- At the upcoming edition of TEFAF Maastricht, Amsterdam based dealer Aronson Antiquairs will bring to market one of the best Delftware collections of the past decades. The collection, which was in a large part assembled by private Dutch collectors over a period of approximately thirty years, comprises many highlights. Although it has its center of gravity in the eighteenth century, it also contains several wonderful early objects. What we can bring to an art fair like TEFAF, really depends on what we can source in the year, or sometimes years, running up to an event like this says Robert Aronson. Although we work year round to find the best Delftware objects, good objects are so incredibly rare, that sometimes we cannot even get a hold of them Aronson continues. The collection to be seen at TEFAF this year can rival with ancients collections such as those of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseu ... More |

| Rare works by Gustav Bauernfeind and Jean-Léon Gérôme headline Christie's Orientalist Art Sale | | Nude 'Mona Lisa' may be by Leonardo, say experts | | Wim Pijbes announced as TEFAF's Global Chairman of Vetting | G ustav Bauernfeind (German, 18481904), Forecourt of the Ummayad Mosque, Damascus signed and inscribed 'G. Bauernfeind, Damaskus-München' (lower left), 47¼ x 36¼ in. (120.8 x 92.2 cm.) Painted in 1890. Estimate on request: in the region of £3 million. © Christie's Images Ltd 2019. LONDON.- Christies London will present a standalone auction of Orientalist Art on 29 April, 2019. Comprising approximately 30 works, the sale will be led by Gustav Bauernfeinds (18481904) monumental painting Forecourt of the Ummayad Mosque, Damascus,1890, which is arguably this German Orientalist artists most sensational work depicting Damascus remaining in private hands (estimate on request: in the region of £3 million). With the only comparable work in a museum collection, this painting presents the last possible opportunity to acquire an undisputed masterpiece by Bauernfeind depicting one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. Further leading highlights include French artist Jean-Léon Gérômes (18241904), Prayer in the Desert, one of his most compelling prayer paintings which was painted at the peak ... More | | The large drawing has been held since 1862 in the huge collection of Renaissance art at the Conde Museum, once the home of one of France's oldest noble families. PARIS (AFP).- A nude drawing that bears a striking resemblance to the "Mona Lisa" was done in Leonardo da Vinci's studio and may be the work of the master himself, a French museum said Monday. Experts at the Louvre in Paris, where the world's biggest collection of Leonardo's work is held, have been examining a charcoal drawing known as the "Monna Vanna" which has long been attributed to the Renaissance painter's studio. But the charcoal preparatory work for a painting of a semi-nude woman, held at the Conde Museum at Chantilly north of Paris, may now have to be reclassified. "There is a very strong possibility that Leonardo did most of the drawing," Mathieu Deldicque, a curator at the Paris museum, told AFP. "It is a work of very great quality done by a great artist," added Deldicque, who initiated a investigation over several months by historians and scientific specialists at the renowned C2RMF laboratory under the Louvre. The large drawing has been held since 1862 ... More | | Wim Pijbes was recommended by TEFAFs Global Vetting Steering Committee, who advised the EC to appoint him to the newly created role. Photo: Vincent Mentzel. HELVOIRT.- TEFAF announced Wim Pijbes as Global Chairman of Vetting for TEFAF, a newly created role established in line with the organizations developing vetting protocols. Pijbes, emeritus general director at the Rijksmuseum, takes over from Henk van Os who chaired the vetting committees at TEFAF Maastricht, and will chair the vetting across all three TEFAF Fairs (TEFAF Maastricht, TEFAF New York Spring and TEFAF New York Fall). This announcement comes as the vetting committees for TEFAF Maastricht are recalibrated to ensure that only experts with as little commercial interest in the art market as possible are included as voting members. As outlined earlier, following a review of legal issues relating to vetting, specifically good governance and assessment of liability, TEFAFs Executive Committee has taken a policy decision that art dealers and auction house experts will no longer be voting members on TEFAF vetting committees. ... | In Albania, a sole Jewish history museum on the brink | | Christie's to offer the Mopelia Collection of Fine Atlases and Travel Books | | Luke Perry, star of 'Beverly Hills, 90210' dead at 52 | Simon Vrusho, 75-years-old, the founder of the Solomon Jewish history museum in the Albanian city of Berat, speaks with an AFP journalist on February 6, 2019. Gent SHKULLAKU / AFP. BERAT (AFP).- On a sloped, cobblestone street in southern Albania sits a small shop, empty except for a dozen framed panels on the walls bearing photos and stories from 500 years of Jewish life. It may be modest but this is Muslim-majority Albania's only Jewish history museum. And the story it tells is exceptional: the Balkan state is the only Nazi-occupied territory whose Jewish population increased during World War II, thanks to the bravery of ordinary families who harboured hundreds of refugees fleeing persecution during the Holocaust. The tiny Solomon Museum, which opened in the city of Berat last year, was a labour of love for local historian Simon Vrusho. But his death last month at age 75 has put its future at risk, with rent only paid through to April. Until now he had covered the museum's costs with his pension and small donations from a box by the door. "Memories ... NEW YORK, NY.- Pace Gallery presents A Fool Through the Cloud, the first exhibition of works by William Monk at 6 Burlington Gardens. The enigmatic title of the exhibition offers a poetic play on words reflecting the multiple readings and interpretations of Monks complex mindscape paintings. Moving fluidly between ideas of reality and mirage, and figuration and abstraction, Monks reinvention of painting lies in the physical presence of his works as object and the viewers experience within the space between them. Comprising new large and small oil paintings, the exhibition is presented as an installation. Central to this, is a suite of paintings titled Sea of Cloud, a Yellow Submarine-imbued zoetrope-like room that features three paintings depicting a montage of what could be interpreted as a cloud forming and dissipating over a swelling sea. PUERTO ESCONDIDO.- Blain|Southern, Kasmin and GalerÃa Hilario Galguera announced the unveiling of Atlantes, a new monumental site-specific work by Mexican artist Bosco Sodi on March 4, 2019. Situated along the Oaxacan coast nearby to the artists foundation, Casa Wabi, in the largely uninhabited area near to Puerto Escondido, Mexico, Atlantes is the most ambitious work of land art in the region in recent years. Demanding over two years of construction, the project consists of 64 clay cubes of 7 feet x 7 feet x 7 feet; each cube is composed of 1,600 clay bricks made by hand by Sodi and a team of local craftsman in a traditional Oaxacan kiln nearby to the site. In total, the installation is the sum of over 102,000 clay bricks, weighing over 700 tonnes. Atlantes monumental scale and gridded structure form an observatory for experiencing the dramatic variance in light and landscape at different times of day, and over the course of the year ... Nearly every scene is a parody of modern life in the country, from the Caterpillar demanding Alice hand over her identity papers to the Queen of Hearts imposing a ban on "everything". It is one of many bold performances staged in the Russian capital, where contemporary theatre with a political twist is booming despite a recent crackdown by the authorities.
