| George Grosz, sharp-eyed Berlin observer, comes home | |

A view of the ground floor, which features an exhibition of the artist George Groszâs life and work, at the new Kleine Grosz Museum in Berlin, May 17, 2022. The new museum, which opened on May 14, in a converted gas station, is dedicated to Grosz, one of the best-known artists of Weimar-era Germany. Mustafah Abdulaziz/The New York Times. by Kimberly Bradley BERLIN.- The pictures are striking. A fat-cat factory boss holds a cigar, strategically placed below the waist. Barflies ogle women in transparent dresses. There are brawls and tawdry street scenes, and even a terrifying, glaring Adolf Hitler. Rendered in strong lines and colors, these are the subjects of George Grosz, one of the best-known artists of Weimar-era Germany. Born in Berlin in 1893, Grosz often left his birth city â heading off to study art in Dresden, and, later, to the United States shortly before the Nazis came to power in 1933. But he returned again and again, the final homecoming only six weeks before his death, in 1959. Now his art is back in the German capital, too. For the first time, a museum in Berlin is dedicated to Groszâs work and life, especially the lesser-known chapters of both: Called the Kleine Grosz Museum (âLittle Grosz Museumâ), it opened May 14. On a scruffy corner of the cityâs Schöneberg district, the museum is housed in a midcentury former gas station that w ... More |

Catch a rising star at the auction house | | Fort Gansevoort extends solo exhibition of works by Louisiana-based artist Willie Birch | | Seller 'shell shocked' as 12th century Indian bronze tops Asian art sale | Amoako Boafo (B. 1984), Yellow Dress. Estimate: USD 250,000 USD 350,000. Price realised USD 819,000. © Christie's Images Ltd 2022. by Jason Farago NEW YORK, NY.- When you want to determine the value of an acre of land, you call an assessor. When you want a value for your jewelry, you find an appraiser with a loupe. And when you want to know the value of a work of art well, here it gets tricky. Painting isnt priced like real estate, at so many dollars a square foot. Sculpture cant be valued against objective criteria, like the four Cs you have for diamonds. All youve got is a shared sense of the importance and rarity of some useless object of beauty. Until very recently, that value was determined by a shadowy social collectivity called the art world: curators, scholars, editors, educators, even the odd critic. Now those old gatekeepers no longer have much of a say. What can you say about the past two weeks sales of modern and contemporary art in New York except that they made even the 1980s and ... NEW YORK, NY.- Fort Gansevoort is presenting Chronicling Our Lives: 1987-2021, a solo exhibition of works by Louisiana-based artist Willie Birch. The presentation features large paintings on paper and painted papier-mâché sculptures created between 1987 and 1996, complemented by a new monumental, mural-like work executed in black and white. Together, the thirty works on view reflect Birchs perspective on the beauty and complexities of the human experience. As a social critic, Birch dismantles the artificial construct of race and points to commonalities between visual and cultural forms throughout the world. While both the artist and his work are closely identified with his native New Orleans, the works on view at Fort Gansevoort were made predominantly while Birch lived in Brooklyn, New York, in the 1980s and early 1990s. The colorful, narrative paintings from his Folkloric series and text-driven paintings from his Dialogue series dep ... The diminutive figure of the four-faced, eight-armed goddess Amoghapasa (wisdom giver) measuring just 8cm high, had come for sale from a private source with modest hopes. CORAL GABLES, FLA.- The Coral Gables Museum is the first stop of a traveling exhibition titled Painting in Excess: Kyiv's Art Revival, 1985 - 1993, a series of Ukrainian avant-garde works revealing freedom during the transitional time when Ukraine came out from under the rule of the former Soviet Union. The current war in Ukraine adds a unique value to these works as they are expressions of a tumultuous time that nurtured the countrys independence. The exhibition was on display at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Jersey earlier this year, but many works from Ukrainian collections could not be returned because of the war. It comes to the Coral Gables Museum thanks to a grant from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The exhibition studies inventive new art styles by non-conformist Ukrainian ... To project feelings into outer objects is the first way of symbolizing, and thus of conceiving those feelings, wrote Susanne Langer in her vital philosophical treatise on the nature of art as a form of communication. She continues, The conception of self, which is usually thought to mark the beginning of actual memory, may possibly depend on this process of symbolically epitomizing our feelings.1 The expression of feeling is a signatory attribute of the paintings of Koak, and it is a force that she uses to articulate her ... Alberta Whittles ancestors arrived from rural Barbados in the 1920s, and earlier; but by the 1960s, theyd truly arrived. Bridgetown was culture, Bridgetown was class. Bridgetown was respectable and respectability? Respectability was safety. When something heavy falls on Eddy Bellegueules father at the factory where he works, leaving his back broyé, écrasé mangled, crushed it may seem a kind of justice. The father has, after all, left his son in approximately the same condition: mangled by homophobia and crushed by unrequited love. Or at least thats how I felt after reading the takedowns of toxic masculinity, and of the French provincial culture that produced it, in two memoirs by the boy who grew up to be Ãdouard Louis. The End of Eddy details his harrowing childhood in Hallencourt, a village about 100 miles north of Paris, where his father fumed at his sons femininity, his schoolmates beat and used him sexually, and even his mother used a gay slur to mock him. Not that it really had competition: When it premiered, a repertory for solo percussion barely existed. But Psappha shook the nascent field with its tension between flexible instrumentation and rigorous beat, between stark rhythms and kaleidoscopic colors. The 14-minute piece, in which the player presides over a sprawling array, came across as a strikingly modern abstraction of an ancient ritual, teetering between sober and ecstatic. Steven Schick managed the precarious balance between those two qualities as he recorded the pounding final minute on a recent afternoon in a studio at the University of California campus here, where he has taught since 1991.
