WASHINGTON (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- At a time when statues and memorials are being taken down or reconsidered across the United States, a new one is going up in the nations capital that could shape the roiling debate over how the country chooses icons to honor. The long-awaited $150 million memorial to Dwight D. Eisenhower will be dedicated in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, paying tribute to the general who led the Allies to victory over totalitarianism in Europe during World War II and the president who sought peace around the world after it was over. BOSTON, MASS.- A thick lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair and a historically significant telegram sold for $81,250, according to Boston-based RR Auction. The hair was removed during his postmortem examination, measuring approximately 2″ long, and was presented to Dr. Lyman Beecher Todd, a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln. The hair is mounted to an official War Department manuscript telegram sent to Dr. Todd by George H. Kinnear, his assistant in the Post Office at Lexington, Kentucky, received in Washington at 11 PM on April 14, 1865. Dr. Lyman Beecher Todd's own account of the autopsy, now preserved in an 1895 manuscript held in the Ida Tarbell collection of Lincoln papers at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, differs slightly from his son's, noting that he clipped the lock himself: "When all was over, General Hardin entered, and handed me a ... Kaplan has donated several works of art to the Gallery over the years, including Modern Sculpture with Aperture (1967) by Roy Lichtenstein in 2004; Foliage (late 19th century) by William Trost Richards in 2015, through the Corcoran Collection acquisition; Aeroplane (19251927) by Louis Lozowick in 2018 (promised gift); and Fascism (1934) by Francis Criss also in 2018 (partial and promised gift). NEW YORK, NY (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- Yi-Wen Jiang, a violinist who was, until recently, billed as a member of the Shanghai Quartet, an internationally known chamber group with roots in China, says he didnt give the pig emoji a second thought. Responding to a post on social media about Chinese American relations a few months ago, he typed in the image of the smiley pig face the cute one, he said and went about his day. But his posting soon caused an outcry and he was called a bigot for what his critics said was his effort to deride the Chinese people as pigs.
