Vera Klement, painter who saw both beauty and evil, dies at 93 | | Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan rookie cards help propel Heritage's Winter Sports Card Catalog Auction past $11.15 million | | Why the Los Angeles Public Library acquired a book publisher | Vera Klement in her studio in 2020. (Tom Van Eynde via The New York Times) by Richard Sandomir NEW YORK, NY.- In late 2009, as she was about to turn 80, Vera Klement was spattering and brushing red paint onto a 6-foot-by-7-foot canvas on the floor of her loft in Chicago where she lived and worked. It depicted a faceless man, his arms pressed tightly to his chest, surrounded by a field of red. To the right, separated by white space, was a black rectangle. This is a homage to Shostakovich, she said in the short film Vera Klement: Blunt Edge, directed by Wonjung Bae, referring to Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich. Bae had made initial contact with Klement by email, expressing her admiration for her. Its an attempt to memorialize his struggle with the Soviet regime that tried in every way to suppress his freedom and individuality. The pose is holding on to himself. The rectangle, she added, was the back ... More | | 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie #57 PSA Gem Mint 10. DALLAS, TX.- Heritages latest Winter Sports Card Catalog Auction, held Jan. 26-27, was another grand slam. By the time bidding closed early Sunday morning, more than 2,752 bidders worldwide helped push the final tally past the $11.15 million mark. Leading the pack was the lone highest-graded blank-back 1916 M101-5 Babe Ruth rookie, as the SGC Excellent+ example realized $630,000. And a 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card graded PSA Gem Mint 10 sold for $372,000, which Sports Collectors Daily notes is the highest price for a Gem Mint PSA graded copy since September 2021. Turns out, you cannot keep Air Jordan grounded for long. Prices were astonishing throughout. Look no further than the signed 1949 Jackie Robinson Bowman, which realized $117,000. The card, one of just eight autographed specimens in the entirety of the PSA population, is graded a PSA Fair 1.5 but the autograph re ... (Emily Berl/The New York Times) by Soumya Karlamangla NEW YORK, NY.- Im a longtime fan of the Los Angeles Public Library. After I learned to read, my mother and I would walk nearly every day from our apartment to the Brentwood branch to check out picture books to add to a growing stack on my nightstand. And throughout my 20s, I was a regular visitor to the charming Los Feliz branch, where I would, of course, borrow books but also sometimes work on my laptop, print documents or drop off my ballot on Election Day. (Fun fact: The Los Feliz library sits where actor Leonardo DiCaprios childhood home used to be.) Libraries are changing; theyre adapting to shifts in technology and expanding their services to help communities in need. ... More |

'Barbie' is adapted? 'Maestro' original? Let's fix the screenplay categories. | | The world's biggest jeweler now only sources recycled metals | | Christie's to show snapshot of global perspectives on Chinese culture to kick off Chinese New Year | Mary Albus with the Barbie doll she shares with a group of friends known as the sisterhood of the Traveling Barbie, outside the AMC Kips Bay theater in New York, July 20, 2023. (Maansi Srivastava/The New York Times) by Alissa Wilkinson NEW YORK, NY.- In the midst of the squabbles about actors and directors, theres always at least one screenplay to debate when Oscar nominations are announced. Last year, in fact, there were two, and I regularly get collared by people wondering: What in the world were Glass Onion and Top Gun: Maverick doing in the best adapted screenplay bucket? Adapted from what? Was there some secret book about fighter pilots or tech mogul whodunits theyd missed? Nope. Theres also no previous story about a Barbie who starts thinking about death and sets out on an existential journey. But that didnt keep the Academy of Motion Picture ... (Pandora via The New York Times) by Elizabeth Paton NEW YORK, NY.- Pandora, known for its affordable sterling-silver charm bracelets, is the worlds largest jewelry company by volume: The Danish chain sells more than 100 million pieces annually. This week, it announced that it is now sourcing only 100% recycled silver and gold for its collections. The move was touted as an important step by a massive company to reduce its environmental footprint. We wanted to lead by example, Pandora CEO Alexander Lacik said in an interview. If we can make positive contributions to society through our use of recycled gold and silver, it means anyone can do it. By working with metals that have already been mined, Pandora wont be digging deeper in search of new materials, allowing the company ... More | | Han Yang, Asian Body Paint. London, 2023. New artwork installation begins in Kings Hill | | One of the foremost Dutch painters Robert Zandvliet is now presenting at Peter Blum Gallery | | Galerie Lelong & Co. now showing Juan Uslé's exhibition 'Viento Sur' | Artwork in construction: The giant steel structure that will form the main apple. Colour samples: Colour samples for the steel structure. WEST MALLING.- Work has begun on the installation of a major new piece of public art in Kings Hill, near West Malling in Kent. Named Slices of Peace, the artwork consists of a giant multicoloured apple, flanked by two smaller apples, and was commissioned from British-Nigerian multi-disciplinary artist and designer Yinka Ilori, MBE, who was appointed as Artist in Residence in Kings Hill in 2021. The artwork is being installed in Orchard Park, Kings Hills new public park, and will serve as a meeting point for the community. Bringing people and communities together is something I am passionate about and aspire to do through all of my work, which is why I am excited to bring Slices of Peace to Kings Hill, said Yinka Ilori. This installation is inspired by the rich culture and heritage of Kent, in particular its history of apple growing. Com ... More | | Robert Zandvliet, Untitled, 2005. Egg tempera on linen, 67 3/4 x 50 inches (172 x 127 cm). NEW YORK, NY.- Since the late 1990s, Robert Zandvliet has continually enriched the historical lineage of Dutch landscape painting in particular, and European art in general, with decisive new directions in composition, perception, and introspection. Being primarily concerned with the elemental or natural world, and what the artist calls "the idea of landscape," the exhibition Florilegium: Overview 1998 - 2023 illustrates Zandvliets inventive pictorial solutions that fuse both abstract and representational elements. He pursues the very essence of a subject and simultaneously challenges viewers' habits of observation by resisting realism while drawing attention to painterly gestures and the medium itself. Zandvliet has divided the exhibition into seven chapters focusing on themes or bodies of work from his evolving approach to painting over the last quarter ... PARIS.- The light, relief and climate of his native Cantabria are ever present in Juan Uslé's paintings. His paintings are like large pages of colourful writing, evoking abstract landscapes. In small, jerky strokes, he creates bands of shimmering, vibrant colours that can evoke reflections on water, shades in the sky or the effect of the wind rippling on green hills. The "Viento sur" (the south wind) is a well-known wind in Santander. Its warm air rushes down the mountain, sometimes in very violent gusts, right into the bay. Its influence on men and women is mythical. Nicknamed "viento loco" (the crazy wind), it is said to cause mood swings, headaches, respiratory illnesses, nervous breakdowns etc. In his work, Juan Uslé focuses on the change in perception he brings to bear on distances, volumes, ... More | | Renato Leotta, Vittoria sul Sole, Etna volcano, 2024. LONDON.- Sprovieri is now presenting Vittoria sul Sole, Renato Leottas second solo exhibition at the Gallery, coinciding with the hundredth exhibition at Sprovieri. A pyroclastic eruption of a volcano ejects ash and lapilli into the sky, forming colossal black clouds composed of tiny particles of rocks and minerals. These exploded tens of kilometres above the crater, obscuring the sun. The prospect of this "alien" matter just created by nature, which has not yet found a purpose in our reality, is to proceed, moved by the winds like the hands of a clock, aerial, until it falls, adhering to the surfaces, erasing them but also nourishing them. Creating a completely black and lightless landscape. The matter, instead of touching the ground, adheres to the pictorial surfaces or rests on plinths, becoming poetic matter. This action of zeroing invokes a libertarian and anarchic aesthetic, an uncontrolled production of nature in which the volc ... More | | Mathieu Malouf. Photo courtesy of Nahmad Contemporary. NEW YORK, NY.- Nahmad Contemporary is now opening Mathieu Malouf: Women and Penguins, an exhibition of new paintings by the French-Canadian artist on view from January 31 through March 16, 2024. In this recent work, Malouf (b. 1984, Montreal) artfully divides his focus between two distinct subjects: female figures and the flightless, cold-weather bird. I am genuinely trying to make beautiful paintings. Not beautiful by contemporary standards of beauty, but something more atemporal or enduring. There are no markers of time in my paintings, so they are not anchored in any particular period. I like art that is beautiful, even if that makes no sense in our era. No one discusses whether things are beautiful or not anymore. Its more difficult to paint women than men. I have only painted mennude men, gay men, famous men. I think men can be more ugly and weird, and it doesnt ... More |

The theme of the night was the movie Saltburn, which, based on the number of attendees who arrived dressed in costume, is quickly garnering cult status. The crowd cheered as the DJ played Untouched by the Veronicas. It was like hopping into a time machine to 2007. More In Peru, a mission to save the stingless Bee NEW YORK, NY.- As a child, Heriberto Vela, an Indigenous resident of Loreto, Peru, watched his father pull nests of wild stingless bees from trees in the Amazon forest. Together, the two then extracted honey from the nests to help cure colds and other ailments. Stingless bees are native to the Amazon, unlike the more familiar but invasive honey bees from Africa and Europe that have spread through the Americas. The most obvious difference is that stingless bees dont sting. Their honey, which is runny enough to be drunk like a liquid and is said to have a citrusy aftertaste, is used by many Indigenous Peruvians as a natural medicine. Velas father didnt know how to salvage the bees they would fly away, or even die. We would take the nests out and leave them lying on the ground in the forest, Vela said. Those bees were lost. Today, Velas methods ... More What do you call a galaxy without stars? NEW YORK, NY.- What do you call a galaxy without stars? This month, radio astronomers announced that they had discovered the darkest galaxy ever not quite seen, a cloud of hydrogen gas resembling our own Milky Way galaxy in many respects, such as its mass and rotation, but with no stars that anyone can discern. What we might have here might is the discovery of a primordial galaxy, a galaxy that is so diffuse, it hasnt been able to form stars readily, Karen ONeil of the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia told a news conference at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in New Orleans on Jan. 8. That same week, a group of Spanish astronomers led by Mireia Montes, a research fellow at the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics, revealed the discovery of another nearly starless galaxy they called Nube, Spanish for cloud. ... That is why we read novels, too, of course for the clues. Heti knows this. It is why her breakout 2010 novel had an exemplary title, one that could stand in for the title of every real novel from Don Quixote down the line: How Should a Person Be? Well, how should we be? In Alphabetical Diaries, Heti comes at this question slant, as Emily Dickinson advised truth tellers to do so slant that you may feel you are in a ship that has been thrown sideways. The book is made up of Hetis frank, funny, filthy and casually philosophical diaries, 10 years of them. She has pared them down and arranged the sentences in order from A ... More |
