NEW YORK, NY.- Moments ago in a packed salesroom at Sotheby’s New York, Claude Monet’s Meules from 1890 — one of art history’s most evocative images – sold for $110.7 million. The result marks a new world auction record for any work by Claude Monet and the first work of Impressionist art to cross the $100 million threshold at auction. Meules is one of only four works from Monet’s acclaimed Haystacks series to come to auction this century, and one of only eight examples remaining in private hands. The other 17 examples reside in distinguished museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Musée d’Orsay, Paris and six in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Meules is further distinguished by its illustrious provenance, having been acquired by wealthy Chicago socialites and fervent collectors of Impressionist works, Mr. and Mrs. Potter Palmer, directly from Monet’s deal ... NEW YORK, NY.- Perrotin New York is presenting a collection of four historical works by Claude Rutault, marking the artist’s second show at Perrotin New York and his fifth show with the gallery. For this exhibition, titled de-finitions/methods from the 70s, the gallery reintroduces Rutault’s famous works, which have not been on view since the 1980’s. These de-finitions/methods have been included at the Biënnale van de kritiek, Antwerp, Belgium (1979); documenta 7, Kassel, Germany (1982); and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (1983). In 1973 Rutault made a radical decision to paint his canvas the same color as the wall on which it was hung. Since then, Rutault’s work has dealt with painting as a concept in itself, rather than painting as a finished and autonomous object. He takes the space in which his works are presented into account, allowing them to evolve according to their installation space. The can ... More

LOS ANGELES (AFP).- Emmy Award-winning US actor and comedian Tim Conway, known for his deadpan delivery and cast of bumbling characters on "The Carol Burnett Show," died on Tuesday at the age of 85, his publicist said. A native of Willoughby, Ohio, Conway served in the army for two years before embarking on his showbiz career as a television presenter and writer. He then starred on the 1960s ABC series "The Steve Allen Show" and "McHale's Navy." He was a fixture throughout the 1970s on "Carol Burnett," where he made his mark with memorable characters like the Oldest Man and Mr. Tudball -- as well as demonstrating a gift for ad-libbing and on-set pranks. He won four Emmys and a Golden Globe Award during 11 years on the show -- capping his ... More

Installation view of Garth Weiser's exhibition at Simon Lee Gallery, Hong Kong.

HONG KONG.- Simon Lee Gallery, Hong Kong, is presenting an exhibition of new paintings by Garth Weiser, the artist’s third with the gallery. Weiser’s densely layered paintings celebrate and interrogate the possibilities of the genre. His unorthodox and exploratory approach to surface, dimensionality and perception has resulted in a body of work that is as engrossing and revealing, as it is imaginative. The artist constructs his paintings layer by layer, reliant primarily on oil paint, spraying and scratching into the canvas’ viscous surface to leave behind a collection of frenetic lines, curves and slashes. As a result of his distinct process, evocative in vigour of the highly-charged manner spearheaded by Abstract Expressionists Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, the artist has succeeded in blurring the line between painting ... Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., 2010. Courtesy Wikimedia Commons.

WASHINGTON, DC.- The Cultural Landscape Foundation today designated the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden as a threatened and at-risk landscape as part of its Landslide program. A proposed redesign would eradicate the work of landscape architect Lester Collins. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden was designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and opened in 1974. Following negative reviews (the New York Times described the Bunshaft-designed sculpture garden as “a gravel pit”), the Smithsonian engaged landscape architect Lester Collins to redesign the garden in 1977; the Collins design opened in 1981. The sculpture garden we see today, with the exception of diminished plantings, is largely the work of Lester Collins. The Smithsonian Institution, which owns the Hirshhorn ... More

The Gloomiest Sunset in the World: Carbon 12 opens an exhibition of works by Amir Khojaesteh   Rebecca Camacho Presents opens a solo show of new work by Oakland-based artist Sahar Khoury   Renowned Sydney artist Tony Costa wins 2019 Archibald Prize for portrait of artist and Zen Buddhist Lindy Lee

Amir Khojasteh, Portrait of a Lonely Man #2, 2019. Oil on canvas, 35 x 28 cm.

DUBAI.- It’s a Neo-expressionist trip that Iranian Amir Khojaesteh’s newest series The Gloomiest Sunset in the World takes viewers on—an ominously tinted journey through thick layers of gestural paint strokes that reference Georg Baselitz, Willem de Kooning or Edvard Munch. But his influences are treated with a twisted humour and jaded nonchalance that suggests that if these portraits had sound, it’d be of muted laughter bouncing within a sound-warped chamber. Real characters and historical artworks— notorious dictators, Warhol’s screen-printed bovine and Matisse’s compositional equilibrium—serve as first- and second-hand resources recontextualised into absurdity. Intentional ‘bad painting’ is as central to Khojasteh’s practice as prismatic colour, which he manipulates to emphasise expression over the finesse of the graphic design and illustration fields that he worked within previously. It may appear that ... More

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Rebecca Camacho Presents announces its inaugural exhibition, a solo show of new work by Oakland-based artist Sahar Khoury. Titled Holder , Khoury’s multi-media sculptures are armatures to house objects significant to the artists’ life - whether her own possessions or those pointing to others by whom she is inspired. With clear indications of hand and process reflected in the finished works, Khoury continues to create sculptures outside of structured methodology. Using materials such as ceramic, concrete, steel, paper-mâché, resin, cloth and leather to construct individual units that are puzzled and bolted together, the artist bypasses the traditional center of object making and inhabits a unique space that is aesthetically raw and purposefully unruly while also formally elegant, pure and emotionally beautiful. ... In a nutshell, that’s what I do,” Costa added. Costa said he listened to an interview Lindy gave at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and found himself agreeing with many of her ideas. “I was attracted to her wisdom, humility, courage, humour and, above all, her deep focus regarding her art practice,’ Costa said. “In my portrait of Lindy, I have kept ... Chapter NY opens Ryan Mrozowski's first exhibition with the gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- Chapter NY announced False Topiary, Ryan Mrozowski’s first exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition features a series of recent paintings of topiary mazes and a selection of dog drawings, presented together for the first time. Mrozowski’s practice engages seriality and repetition to reveal unexpected nuance in forms derived from the natural world. His banal subjects—often sourced from encyclopedic volumes—assume new meaning within his constructed environments. He manipulates these easily recognizable, often vaguely pleasant images with painterly interventions that depart from conventional representational methods. Their visual lushness urges a slowed down viewing process, coaxing viewers to delve deeper into the artist’s imaginative tableaus. For his exhibition at Chapter, Mrozowski resists his inclination to bend representational ... More
