Scott Reyburn and Robin Pogrebin NEW YORK, NY.- Blue-chip treasures from one of Manhattans most acrimonious billionaire divorces on Monday night helped Sothebys achieve what it called a record total sale for a private collection of art at auction, $922 million, with fees. Sothebys sold its second cache of trophy-name modern and contemporary works owned by real estate magnate Harry Macklowe and his former wife Linda, an honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for $246.1 million. The first installment of the sale, in November, raised $676.1 million from 35 lots, topped by works by Mark Rothko ($82.5 million) and Alberto Giacometti ($78.4 million). As is the nature of sequels, the second Macklowe sale, comprising 30 lots, wasnt quite in that league, but works by Rothko at $48 million, Gerhard Richter at $30.2 million and Andy Warhol at $18.7 million pushed the final total, which, Sothebys said, eclipsed the sale of the Peggy and David Rockefeller Collection in 2018 for $835.1 million, before in ... $100 million film studio to rise from rubble of ex-public housing site | | Tomás Saraceno's first permanent installation in southern Europe opens in Barcelona | | A long-hidden library of exceptional natural history reappears after 70 years | A rendering of Lionsgate Newark, which will include six large soundstages. HLW International LLP VUW Studios via The New York Times. by Tracey Tully NEW YORK, NY.- With a made-for-television flourish, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka climbed into an excavator earlier this year and punched the machines metal claw through a crumbling brick wall of the citys first public housing site. The long-abandoned apartment complex would be replaced, he promised, with something better. On Tuesday, officials announced a grand new vision for the 15-acre lot: The mounds of rubble at the center of a blighted neighborhood less than 2 miles from Newark Liberty International Airport will be replaced by a $100 million television and movie production hub featuring six large soundstages. There will be space for set building, postproduction editing, crew trucks and catering services when the facility opens in March 2024, officials said. BARCELONA.- Cloud Cities Barcelona, by artist Tomás Saraceno, invites participants into a space of communal encounter, discourse, and critical speculation, suspended at a height of over 130 meters over the city of Barcelona. Opening on May 20th, 2022, and housed in the 360° observation deck of Mirador Torre Glòries, it will be Saracenos first permanent interactive sculpture in southern Europe. The artwork occupies an area of 130m³ and is composed of 113 cloud spaces, like droplets of water condensing along the strands of a three-dimensional spiders web, made of 5000 nodes connecting 6km of tensile cables. Moving through the air at a height between 4 and 10m relative to the floor, or becoming enveloped by the atmosphere of the cupolas apex, participants are offered a novel sensory experience, converting this observatory into a suspended realm from which to look inwards and outwards, to gather and dialogue, ... But he might stop making them. NEW YORK, NY.- Alex Garland knows that calling his new film Men is a provocative act. Its quite interesting that such a short, simple word can be so freighted with massive and entirely subjective meanings, he said. As a writer and filmmaker, Garland is drawn to subjects that demand discussion: In the twisty robot parable Ex Machina (2015) and the Natalie Portman sci-fi drama Annihilation (2018), he favored a bold, stark setup that sat at the intersection of a cultural flash point. The tricky Men operates in a similar vein, casting Jessie Buckley as Harper, a woman coming to terms with her husbands death and the blame he leveled at her in his final moments. Harper rents a British country house to work through her trauma, but the men of the local village (all of whom are played by actor Rory Kinnear) insinuate, belittle ... Gentle Battle charts a path through these often clouded waters, a guided journey conceived as a series of time-spaces in which we are invited to dwell and reflect. Through symbolic elements as diverse as a mirror, an elephant tusk, a four-poster bed, and a karaoke booth, Oyiri generates doors, capsules and portals to other realities in which stories slip into histories - modern mythologies that mix and remix personal and collective experiences.
