Artis Steakhouse looks like it belongs in Miami, but tastes like Lakewood’s culinary future (photos) Artis in Lakewood is a new steakhouse aiming to bring a global and lively culinary experience to Cleveland’s West Side. Andrew Mansour debuted Artis, the first restaurant he’s owned, in August 2024, in the building at 17900 Detroit Avenue, which previously housed The Side Quest. Aside from an art-deco vibe, the menu features a wide variety of dishes, including several cuts of high-quality beef. The Friars’ Table is scheduled to go in the former Cowell & Hubbard spot at 1305 Euclid Ave. this winter through a deal between Playhouse Square, Capuchin Ministries LLC – subsidiary of the Capuchin Order - and restaurateur Brandon Chrostowski. Playhouse Square owns the building. Owner of the lease will be Capuchin Ministries LLC. Chrostowski will serve as a consultant-operator on the project. Melt undergoing renovation at sole location Melt Bar and Grilled’s Lakewood location is closed temporarily while the restaurant undergoes a major renovation. The restaurant company, which has undergone several financial challenges this year, is scheduled to reopen the restaurant with some menu and decor changes at some point next week. READ MORE Taste testing wiener schnitzel at the Cleveland Oktoberfest Googling the origin of wiener schnitzel is more confusing than it is clarifying. Was it created in Austria? Germany? Italy? Each country has made its mark on the pouned, breaded and fried veal (or is it pork?). And every chef has their interpretation. I tried four interpretations of the many, last weekend, at the Cleveland Oktoberfest at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. The Oktoberfest has nearly 20 food vendors, many of them offering schnitzel on menus filled with traditional German and Eastern European specialties. OPENINGS/CLOSINGS OneKitchen opens with Henry the FryBot The food hall at Jack Thistledown Racino has been completely redone. OneKitchen now includes a bakery and multiple new menu items, but the star of the show is Henry, a FryBot. The robotic chef is a hard worker, seamlessly shifting between fryer and freezer. Solstice took over the space at 14310 Detroit Avenue replacing Deagan’s Kitchen and Bar, which was open for 13 years. It officially opened in January of this year. One of Solstice’s owners, Annabella Andricks confirmed to cleveland.com on August 29 that the restaurant was permanently closed. READ MORE |

EVENTS/TASTINGS Cleveland Oktoberfest The annual end-of-summer party is back, with beer and bands, food (tons of food!) and so much more. Stroll through the myriad of vendors, quaff beer from the local breweries competing for bragging rights in the annual microbrew competition, watch wiener-dog races, sip a Jägermeiser, clap for your favorite masskrugstemmen (stein-holding) competitor and of course cheer as the glockenspiel sounds. Multiple tribute bands are slated to perform. It’s a great people-watching event, too, with German attire welcomed. And don’t forget Carl Jara and his amazing sand-sculpting skills. PICKS OF THE WEEK Oddfellows Restaurant On cool weather days, dining returns inside. OddFellows, which opened in Chagrin Falls earlier this summer, is a good spot for a multi-course, hardy dinner. Chicken, lamb, steak, fish are filling entrees, but the cauliflower steak is the real surprise. The vegan option is served with chimichurri, pomegranate and butter bean puree. Finish with a baked hot chocolate or seasonal fruit cobbler. OddFellows is at 16 North Main Street, Chagrin Falls. DETAILS Merwin’s Wharf Summer is winding down, so don’t let it pass without checking out this spot on the river. MORE INFO Never Say Dive Despite the extensive list of new restaurants in Greater Cleveland in 2024, we can’t stop revisiting Never Say Dive in Old Brooklyn this year. We’ve tried nearly everything on menu, and you really can’t go wrong. From caviar-topped hot dogs to buckets of fried chicken and cava for $40 on Tuesdays, there are so many reasons to love this high-low dive bar. SPOTLIGHT Ireland Family Wines: Born in NE Ohio, made in California Chris Ireland has an extensive background in wine, and during the coronavirus pandemic he formulated a plan to oversee the making of fine wine, specifically Pinot Noir. Ireland, who was raised in Northeast Ohio, lives outside of Columbus and travels to California multiple times a year to check on harvest, bottling and blending of his wine.
