Bonni Rambatan (IDN): Juxtaposed Ideologies: Exploring Sequential Art as Social Critique

"Juxtaposed Ideologies" refer to both the artist's collage technique of various styles, but also its subject matter: Right-wing extremism, Left-wing tribalism, conspiracy thinking, and a pervasive sense of postmodern cynicism all seem to juxtapose themselves in the multiplicity of screens in our day-to-day life.
What do we make of all this mess? Such is the question Bonni Rambatan attempts to tackle in his two short comics.

#Birdhead, a celebrated collective comprised of Ji Weiyu and Song Tao, is known for #snapshot-like #photographs of everyday life unfolding in #Shanghai. Occasionally, the artists insert themselves and their friends into the scenes, which are individually insignificant, but collectively lend insight into what makes Shanghai, the representative Chinese #metropolis, tick.

Marina Marković (SRB): Artist Talk

Marina Marković is an artist who questions and (re)works feminine everyday and life forms, affects and (corpo)reality in various media. Personal experience with anorexia in young adult age places her work in constant relation to maturing and sexuality; gender (de)construction. Thus she explores themes of consumption and body economics as societal coercion, states of vulnerability, (in)adequacy and (de)subjectivation, and maps the traumatic events by investigating personal female histories and narratives, questioning female archetypes, negotiating the body-state and gendering the gaze.
In her Artist Talk on Monday, January 29, she will discuss her artistic practice and present recent projects.

Invited by curator Anamarija Batista, Iva Simčić will explore the meaning of production/productive work in a general sense and its meaning and connotations in relation to art(making) for the exhibition "Productive Work_what is it supposed to be?" at frei_raum Q21 exhibition space this summer. Is a productive work solely a process of production/making that results in an “auratic” (or not) artefact or can it be conceived as a research or thinking activity that an artist embarks upon? As an artist, an educator, a theoretician how do I perceive my productive work? Is complying with dominant production “ideas” complying with (and perpetuating) a dominant system that sustains them?

Irena Sladoje (BIH)

Irena Sladoje was born in 1976 in Fojnica, Bosnia and Herzegovina and graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo in 2003. She has also worked as an occupational therapist and her social work with people with special needs and psychiatric patients often influence her artworks. In Vienna, she is doing research on the topic of work in art for the exhibition "Productive Work_what is it supposed to be?" curated by Anamarija Batista at frei_raum Q21 exhibition space.

Selma Asotić: Madwomen and Their Mothers

A famous black-and-white photograph taken in London in 1960 serves as a starting point for investigating the long-standing myth that writing and creative genius are masculine prerogatives.
The main purpose of the lecture by Writer-in-Residence Selma Asotić is to explore how literary history and literary canons erase the lives and voices of women, suppress the creation of an artistic matrlineage and systematically divest women of agency and creative power.
The session will focus on women’s attempts to subvert the existing power dynamics, recover their lost female ancestors and reclaim their anger. Although it uses examples from different literary traditions, the lecture will specifically focus on modern-day Balkans and the establishment of new feminist platforms in the region - such as the magazine for feminist theory and art BONA - that hope to become sites of a new kind of literary community, one that is based on solidarity instead of oppression.

Birdhead (CHN) - Ji Weiyu & Song Tao

Birdhead is a photographic collective founded in 2004, consisting of Ji Weiyu (Chinese, born 1980) and Song Tao (Chinese, born 1979). Both artists graduated from the Shanghai Arts and Crafts School in 2000; Ji also studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Ji and Song live and work in Shanghai.

Bojana Bregar (SVN)

Bojana Bregar is a freelance film critic, writer and curator of film programmes. In 2014 she co-founded the Kraken Short Film Promotion Society that offers visibility to many up-and-coming Slovenian filmmakers via various cinematic and cinema related events, the main being FeKK – Ljubljana International Short Film Festival.
She is a member of the editorial staff at Ekran Magazine, one of the oldest film magazines in Europe. In her writing she is most interested in contemporary cinema and its socio-cultural context, as well as larger historical and ideological implications of cinema as art. As Artist-in-Residence she will work together with the curators of the exhibition “Shaping Democracy! – The Republic in 24 Frames per Century” that opens on March 21, 2018 at frei_raum Q21 exhibition space.

Dušica Dražić (SRB)

Dušica Dražić is an artist and curator that explores spaces of irregularity that carry strong political meaning. She analyses their transformation and rethinks them at the level of cultural continuity. The history of the place and opposing interpretations of the same past were always in the foreground of her work. Often the complexity of the subject entails a combination of scientific and artistic work, that fosters transdisciplinary approach.
During the residency she will realise the work “From here to the sea” that will be a part of the exhibition “Productive Work - what is that supposed to be?” at frei_raum Q21 exhibition space.

Mislav Žitko (HRV)

Mislav Žitko is a lecturer in philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. His research includes social epistemology and philosophy of social science. He is also a member of the Center for Labor Studies in Zagreb within which he works on the issues of heterodox political economy and class theory.
