Thanks to everyone who came to the launch of our first Atelier Open last Thursday evening. With 130 artists exhibiting from across the UK, it was a busy evening in our arches on Brighton Beach. This is a truly open Open, with 200 artworks selected from over 1000 entries. Professional, emerging and amateur artists are represented working in print, sculpture, painting, textiles, mosaic, collage, 3D-printed resin, and more. Congratulations to Fiona White who won the Cass Art Prize for Two-Dimensional Work for her piece Pebble 1, and to Stefanie Smith who won the Cass Art Prize for Three-Dimensional Work for Into the Overwhelm. Our thanks to Judy Stevens, Director of Artists Open Houses, for judging, and to Cass Art for sponsoring the inaugural Atelier Open prizes. You can have your say too. Our public vote for your favourite pieces will remain open until the end of the exhibition on 3rd September. Come down to the arches and cast your vote, and if you can’t visit in person, you can view the whole collection online. |
In the shop this week are new works by ceramicist Alma Boyes. With an established ceramic practice spanning over 40 years, Alma's current work explores the historic technique of agateware which was prominent in the UK in 17th & 18th century industrial ceramics, most famously at Josiah Wedgewood. The term ‘Agateware’ refers to ceramic pieces made from coloured or mixed clays, with the unique colourful swirls and patterns created during the throwing process mimicking the appearance of agate stone. Having taught the 3D course at Brighton University for 36 years, Alma is now devoting her time to making ceramics, and we are delighted to have her work on display in the shop alongside two of her former students, Sylvia K Ceramics and Emma Johnson. |
