“Stay big, Jay! Stay big!” Ray shouted, from the sidelines. On the court, his starting center Jay -- a 6’4”, 260-pound 15-year-old -- who had been huddled over the ball, quickly rolled back up. The defender who had been pushing against him was forced off. “Stay big.” What is that? I posed the question after practice. Jay makes himself small when he crouches and hugs the ball; he makes it easy for the smaller, quicker guards to come in and steal it, Ray explained. But when he stands up -- ball under his chin, elbows out -- he leverages his size and can better control the ball. “If he stays big, they have no chance,” Ray said. Size and presence. Staying big. It’s creating a presence that causes your competitors to back off. We look at what it takes for companies to stay ahead of their competition in today’s Leadership & Development story. That might seem an odd story choice for an HR publication, but it’s really not. Employers are competing for talent today. And getting them takes more than Friday lunches and ping-pong tables in the break room. It means “staying big” -- leveraging your strengths to edge out the competition and win (and retain) quality hires. What are you doing to “stay big” in the recruitment and retention game? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
