| | | | | | | | Highlights: | | | | 1 Charles-Marie-Isidore CHOISELAT (1824-1904) et Stanislas RATEL (1815-1858) Autoportrait des photographes, 1843-1845 Daguerréotype ½ plaque 10 x 13 cm oval (plaque 15,5 x 19 cm), dans un cadre 6 000 / 8 000 € | | | | A rare and exceptional half plate daguerreotype, representing a self-portrait of the 19th century photographers Charles Choiselat and Stanislas Ratel standing behind a group of unidentified men taken around 1843-1845. The scene is particularly interesting due to the animated interactions of the men: they are either smoking, playing cards, reading a newspaper, standing, sitting, looking out at us or at each other… We are inclined to believe these men are close friends of the photographers and are perhaps also photographers themselves. The scene includes a phantom figure of a woman, perhaps a servant, that was asked to step into the picture but quickly stepped out. We can see a chair turned over from the movement. Charles Choiselat and Stanislas Ratel are known for their panoramic daguerreotypes of French monuments and landscapes and took very few portraits. This is the only known self-portrait of the two photographers together.
