The Conversation Hour: Stay or go? A bushfire plan talkback forum |
| |
On Monday, Virginia Trioli presented a special talkback forum to take calls from listeners about their decision to stay and defend property or leave in the event of a bushfire. Joining her on The Conversation Hour were: Andrew Crisp APM, Emergency Management Commissioner, Victoria Prof Jim McLennan, bushfire safety researcher and Adjunct Professor of Psychology, La Trobe University Dr John Bates, Research Director, Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC. One of the callers was Michael from Narbethong, who went through the Black Saturday fire, he talks about the importance of having multiple bush fire plans, “Have several bush fire plans, as you need contingencies, and only have 1 to 5 points, keep what you’re going to do simple and basic, as if something doesn’t work, be prepared to flip it and do the next thing." Michael said, in catastrophic conditions,“even when you think you’re defendable, things like pumps, with ember attack, they melt at the plastic suction hose, even when you’ve got things that are there to protect you, you can’t rely on it.” | |
