 | | From the City to the Workplace: Decarbonization and Wellness | Buildings will absorb carbon. That’s what world-renowned architecture firm SOM proposes – and predicts – for the future of the built environment. Taking inspiration from nature, its daring Urban Sequoia high-rise concept stitches together decarbonization with health and wellness, addressing the ways in which we can meet both challenges simultaneously.
And while that project is still a vision, its central ideas are already manifest at the most intimate scale within the firm’s own workplace at 7 World Trade Center in New York City: Through an approach SOM calls "radical reduction,” the well-being of the team is prioritized via an efficient and economical use of materials and resources.
Featuring SOM’s Irina Sai and Julia Murphy, and moderated by AZURE’s Editor in Chief, Elizabeth Pagliacolo, this talk will delve into how we can design from the inside out and the outside in — uniting a vision for carbon sequestration at the city scale with an emphasis on creating a healthier environment inside, where we spend the majority of our lives. Using both Urban Sequoia and 7 World Trade Center office as case studies, the discussion will explore SOM’s strategies for human-centric, mindful, and purpose-driven environments. | Date: Friday, January 24, 2025 Time: 1PM Location: Mainstage - Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building 255 Front Street Tickets: Included in IDS Trade Day Registration | Note: This session has been submitted for OAA and IDCEC accreditation. | | Speakers | | |
