Available jobs unexpectedly increased in Sept.

There were 10.7 million available jobs in September, compared with a revised 10.3 million in August, according to the Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. The gain was unexpected, as a Bloomberg survey showed that economists foresaw a decline to 9.8 million available positions.

Employees' job satisfaction declines, survey finds

US employees' satisfaction with their employers has dropped from last year as burnout and insufficient pay and health care benefits lead many to consider leaving their jobs, according to a Mercer survey. "In 2022, employees value a workplace that centers on well-being, where they have more-sustainable workloads and more resources to support their holistic health -- financial, physical, and mental," says Lauren Mason, senior principal for Mercer's career business practice.

Path to Workforce
A national apprenticeship institute created with the help of the federal government could "elevate the importance of apprenticeships in American culture to the level of university degree programs," writes McKinsey's Asutosh Padhi, co-author of "The Titanium Economy." Germany's apprentice system, which uses a dual-training model, could provide a blueprint for the US, Padhi writes.

Leaders can create a culture where employees feel safe enough to candidly share their opinions and ideas by treating feedback as a gift, listening to understand before offering suggestions and bringing in an outside consultant to collect input when needed, writes Lolly Daskal. "Bringing in a third party to talk with people assures them that their replies will be anonymous, and it frees them to speak freely about management issues," Daskal writes.
