Making my way as a professional conductor, Bärenreiter editions were definitely the ones I used most, especially the works of Dvořák and later those of Beethoven. In those cases where the publishing house prepares Urtext editions from scratch, the Bärenreiter scores are indispensable today, and I am very grateful for their quality. Now all six parts of this unique work within the international symphonic repertoire are brought together in one conducting score. The editor chose the autograph scores as his main source. The first editions of "Vyšehrad", "Vltava" and "From Bohemia's Woods and Fields" in fact contain several misprints and a number of inaccuracies due to an incorrect reading of the manuscripts; therefore, these first editions together with the composer's four-hand piano arrangements served the editor only as secondary sources. The first prints of the other parts of the cycle appeared after Smetana's death and were therefore not taken into account for this edition. | | |

It was composed in Gotha, where Spohr's wife Dorette received harp lessons from the court chamber musician Johann Backofen. On the young couple's concert tours at that time, Dorette not only performed new compositions by her husband for this instrument, but also fantasias by her teacher. The influence of Backofen's works on Spohr's Fantasia is unmistakable. This new Urtext edition by harpist and musicologist Masumi Nagasawa presents the two fantasias by Spohr and Backofen accompanied by a detailed Foreword (Ger/Eng) and Critical Commentary (Eng). The edition also contains a score of Spohr's Fantasia with fingering and further historically informed performance markings provided by the editor. In addition, a comprehensive Performing Practice Commentary (Eng) is included, in which the performance of this piece, originally written for the single pedal harp, is conveyed on the modern double pedal harp in accordance with the performance practice of Spohr's time (including fingering, tempi, ornamentation, pedalling techniques such as glissandi, etc.). | |

Rameau, Jean-Philippe | Zéphire RCT 61 Acte de ballet | Editor: Berton-Blivet, Nathalie | BA 8872-90 | EUR 20.50 | Vocal score (French) | 9790006575893 | Rameau's ballet-opera "Zéphire" is based on the legend of Zephire and Flora, as immortalized by Ovid in the fifth book of his "Fasti". Zéphire, the god of the west wind, loves Chloris, a forest nymph of the goddess Diana. Despite the brevity of the dramatic action, the nymphs and zephyrs, the ballet and the chorus, are given great importance in the dances and choruses. In the end, the lovers win the favour of the feared goddess, and Zéphire transforms Chloris into Flora, the goddess of spring. Similar to "Pygmalion", this ballet act also offers the popular ingredients of Rameau's operas in a compressed form: a fragrant, light orchestral texture alongside delicate, expressive melodies, in addition instrumental numbers of various colours, sometimes floating, then again with rhythmic drive. Interestingly, Zéphire is not cast as a haute-contre in this acte de ballet, but as a soprano. The many questions surrounding the possible compositional context of this little gem, which was never performed during Rameau's lifetime, are explored in detail in the introduction to the corresponding Complete Edition volume published by OOR. This new critical edition is based on the autograph, which contains several layers of composition. Five appendices also reproduce the original versions in the vocal score, insofar as these could be restored. | |

I:67 around 1775/76, approximately ten years after his creative period began at the Esterházy Palace. At this time, the opera activities there were in a phase of development, which was accompanied by a small expansion of the prince's chapel. Haydn was now able to employ two bassoon parts in his symphonies for the first time, thus creating a fuller sound in the woodwinds of Symphony No. 67. As well as the additional bassoon part, this work is characterised by several peculiarities in the strings: towards the end of the slow movement, they play with mutes and "col legno", the latter instruction being one of the earliest in music history for this style of playing. All the musical innovations to which the composer subjected the traditional genre of the “tragédie lyrique” are manifested here, and so it is particularly the purely instrumental numbers – the divertissements and ballets – that so astonish us today in terms of their diversity of expression. Incorporated into the opera, they drive the dramatic plot forward and by means of motivic interlocking they adopt an overall formal function. In the form of orchestral suites, the baroque colour palette with its rhythmic complexity and atmospheric diversity can be heard on the basis of this edition quasi as absolute music – extremely varied and as tempestuous as the plot suggests. | |

Schubert, Franz | Der Spiegelritter | New Schubert Edition II/11 Editor: Loy, Felix | BA 5582-01 | EUR 328.00 | Full score, linen-bound | 9790006577156 | Reduced subscription price available | Unfortunately, it has remained a fragment: "Der Spiegelritter" D 11, based on a libretto by August von Kotzebue, is Franz Schubert's earliest surviving stage work and thus marks the beginning of his almost lifelong endeavours to establish himself as a stage composer. The composer left behind eleven completed and a further eight unfinished works, of which only three were ever performed during his lifetime. "Der Spiegelritter" D 11, which belongs to the Singspiel genre, is a typical "Viennese magic opera", which was popular and successful in Vienna even before Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and still in Schubert's day. As Schubert's autograph is undated and there are no other known sources on the question of when it was composed, numerous philological clues had to be used to narrow down the date. In the Introduction to the volume, the editor deals in detail with the complex question of dating, the libretto source, the classification of the fragmentary parts in the plot, questions as to the writing materials used in the corrections and the scoring. The edition itself presents the last authentic version of the fragment as it is seen in the autograph. However, not only did the work remain unfinished as a whole, but two of the surviving musical numbers are also fragments. In order to better place the composed parts in their dramatic context, the appendix of the volume contains the complete libretto as Schubert probably had it. | |

The introduction to this volume of the Complete Edition examines in detail the many unanswered questions regarding the dating, the attribution of the unknown librettist, the circumstances of the composition and the hypotheses in this regard. The edition argues that the structure of the libretto of "Zéphire" reflects Louis de Cahusac's principles, as, similar to "Les Fêtes de Polymnie" and later "Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour", the score features numerous dances and choruses that are closely interwoven into the plot. Cahusac, who saw the imitation of nature as the essence of art, liked to provide precise stage directions for choral and ballet interludes; this is also the case in "Zéphire". This critical edition is based on the undated autograph and a copy by the copyist Serre from 1777, whereby the autograph manuscript contains various layers of composition; these earlier layers are reproduced in five appendices as far as they can be reconstructed. | |

Ambassador of Czech Music The Czech publishing house Bärenreiter Praha is part of the Bärenreiter publishing group. It goes back to the Czechoslovakian state publishing house Supraphon, which was privatised after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1991. The Bärenreiter Managing Directors Barbara and Leonhard Scheuch immediately decided to participate in the privatisation. After all, they had already been cultivating diverse relationships with Czechoslovakia for many decades. Among other things, the Complete Edition of Leoš Janáček's works, issued jointly with Editio Supraphon, commenced publication in 1978. The lengthy privatisation process finally came to an end in 1999, when Bärenreiter was able to acquire the Czech publishing house and incorporate it into the Bärenreiter Group. The publishing oeuvre of Bärenreiter Praha spans the development of music from the Middle Ages to the present day and is primarily dedicated to the works of Czech composers, with the classical concert repertoire playing just as important a role as music educational editions, contemporary music and music books. With its 25 employees, the company publishes its own titles and is also the exclusive distributor of the Bärenreiter Group's products in Central and Eastern Europe and Russia. The rental department provides performance material on hire for concerts and stage. The works come from both the catalogues of the Bärenreiter Group as well as other publishers. In this way, Bärenreiter Praha continues to contribute to the dissemination of Czech music, fulfilling the high-quality standards of the Bärenreiter brand in terms of editorial techniques, design and printing. |
