"When I won the Toronto International Bach Piano Competition in 1985, I was presented with a bound Barenreiter edition of the solo keyboard works of Bach which I treasure to this day. Having used their wonderful editions for many composers, I am now recording all the Mozart Sonatas and am thrilled to have the Barenreiter edition with its great clarity and excellent comments. It makes the learning process a true pleasure! "

Beethoven, Ludwig van | Complete Bagatelles for Piano with Bagatelle in A minor WoO 59 "Fur Elise" | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Aschauer, Mario | BA 9649 | EUR 23.95 | 9790006539895 | This edition brings together all of Beethoven's pieces that he himself associated with the term "bagatelle", a trifle. The Bagatelles reflect Beethoven's diverse compositional cosmos in miniature and span almost his entire oeuvre from 1801/02 to 1824/25. In terms of playing technique, they range from moderate dexterity to demanding virtuosity. In addition to the well-known collections opp. 33, 119 and 126, ten more pieces were found after Beethoven's death in an envelope labelled “Bagatelles”. These included the revised version of “Fur Elise” as well as two further revisions of bagatelles which appear here in print for the first time. Beethoven conceived the cycle, still known today as "op. 119" – although this opus number did not stem from him – as two separate projects with five and six pieces respectively. Our edition presents these two collections separately for the first time, as Beethoven proposed. Variants, additions and revisions in the first print that go beyond the main manuscript source and were most likely intended by Beethoven are presented in grey print. A variety of new insights, an informative Foreword and insightful notes on Viennese piano playing in Beethoven's time (Ger/Eng) as well as a detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) offer the performer an abundance of information and a new perspective on Beethoven's bagatelle oeuvre.

Metelka, Jakub | The Secret Garden Modern Piano Nocturnes
BA 11574 | EUR 15.95 | 9790260109711 | The album “The Secret Garden” by Jakub Metelka (b. 1986) contains fifteen recital pieces in simple song form, thus tying in with his successful, technically less demanding piano cycle “Little Virtuoso” (BA11569). The individual compositions in the collection are characterized by Metelka's unmistakable, tonally anchored melodic style, enriched with many unusual harmonies and colours, which here underlines the slightly melancholic and mysterious character of these nocturnal pieces. The playful illustrations by Andrea Tachezy reflect these moods in an imaginative and charming way. Although it is not really a predetermined cycle, the fifteen atmospheric character pieces, with their programmatic titles and their arrangement tell a kind of fairy tale that culminates in the magical final composition “The Secret Garden”.

Mickova, Magdalena | Thirty Melodies with Rhymes for the Youngest Violinist
H 8060 | EUR 12.95 | 9790260109766 | This little violin method was written by the well-known Czech violin teacher Magdalena Mickova for children of around five years old and incorporates her longstanding teaching experience with this age group. The child first learns to hold the violin correctly, to place the fingers on the fingerboard, to pluck the strings and use the bow. The pieces that follow consist of simple melodies that are printed with large child-friendly notes and allow fingering in the major key to be practised in first position. Rhymes are underlaid making it easier for the children to grasp the rhythms quickly. The pieces are arranged progressively until legato playing is achieved in the last piece. A valuable help are online teaching videos that Magdalena Mickova recorded with one of her students.

Haydn, Joseph | Symphony in E-flat major Hob. I:22 "Der Philosoph" | Editor: Walter, Horst | BA 10991 | EUR 30.95 | Full score | 9790006577453 | Joseph Haydn wrote Symphony No. 22 in E-flat major in 1764 as part of his tenure as Vice-Kapellmeister at the Esterhazy court. The work is unique because of its instrumentation with two cors anglais: this instrument, which Haydn had used in some divertimenti from around 1760 onwards, does not appear in any of his other symphonies – or indeed in those by other composers at that time. The work undoubtedly represents an experiment which Haydn undertook with the sonority of the symphonic genre – although copies of this composition prove that the cor anglais parts were often replaced by flutes or oboes in performances elsewhere. Another peculiarity of this symphony is its slow, serious opening movement with a wind “chorale”, whose striking character may have earned the symphony its (probably not authentic, only later documented) nickname “The Philosopher”. | | BA10991-74 | Violin I | EUR 5.95 | Minimum order quantity: 4 copies |

Haydn, Joseph | Symphony in C major Hob. I:60 "Il Distratto" | Editors: Friesenhagen, Andreas / Wilker, Ulrich | BA 10992 | EUR 39.95 | Full score | 9790006577514 | The six movements of Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 60 “Il Distratto” once served as incidental music for the comedy “Le Distrait” by Jean-Francois Regnard (1655–1709), which was performed at the Esterhazy court in 1772. This consisted of an overture, four entr'actes – the play is in five acts – and a finale. But this composition is not merely a compilation of stage music: Haydn referred to it in letters as a symphony. As a “character symphony”, it takes up the subject of the play – human absentmindedness – which is expressed in music. The minuet and trio of the symphony, with their stylistic diversity (or rather lack of plan), “portray the musicians in great disarray” as a reviewer stated in the Pressburger Zeitung of 27 January 1776. He also wrote, “One must laugh out loud at the thought of it” concerning the final movement, in which the violins unexpectedly begin to tune their instruments after a few opening measures. These and other compositional effects make the symphony a prime example of Haydn's musical humour and ingenuity. | | BA10992-74 | Violin I | EUR 9.50 | Minimum order quantity: 4 copies |

Rameau, Jean-Philippe | Les Fetes d'Hebe RCT 41 Ballet in one prologue and three entrees Symphonies
| Editor: Denecheau, Pascal | BA 8888 | EUR 69.00 | Full score | 9790006577613 | "Les Fetes d'Hebe" or "Les Talents Lyriques" (1739) belong to the highly opulent ballet opera genre, which was only common in 18th century courtly France. Rameau's "Indes Galantes" (1735) is often considered the pinnacle of this “mixed” genre, which connects instrumental music, song and dance in the form of a prologue with subsequent entrees through a general theme. With "Les Fetes", however, the composer succeeded in creating another masterpiece of Baroque operatic art, which is not inferior to the "Indes Galantes" in its musically kaleidoscopic diversity. This full score, which brings together all the instrumental numbers of all versions based on volume IV.4 of the "Opera Omnia Rameau" (BA06688-01), offers the possibility to play this precious music in the form of a suite as a concert performance. Rameau orchestrated several of his best-known "Pieces de clavecin" for this work, and the third entree in particular is rich in that yearning, nostalgic music of Rameau that immediately captivates the audience.

Rameau, Jean-Philippe | Les Fetes d’Hebe RCT 41 | Editor: Denecheau, Pascal
| BA 8866-90 | EUR 85,00 | Vocal score | 9790006577200 | The ballet "Les Fetes d'Hebe" deals with the talents that are usually the subject of the Opéra and are placed at the service of love on stage: poetry and declamation (1st entree, "La Poésie"), song and harmony (2nd entree, "La Musique") and finally dance and choreography (3rd entree, "La Danse"); hence the alternative title of the ballet "Les Talents lyriques". In this ballet opera, Rameau consistently gives priority to the female roles. The prologue glorifies Hebe, the goddess of youth, and her alliance with love, while "La Poesie" praises the poetress Sappho, who sings almost throughout, and "La Musique" concentrates on the omnipresent princess Iphise; finally, "La Danse" has as its main character the shepherdess Égle, who excels in dance and song.

When Karl Votterle first joined the league of publishers in September 1923 with the first issue of the “Finkensteiner Blatter”, an eight-page booklet of folk songs, one thing was certainly not in his mind: to stand alongside the long-established publishers in Leipzig and Mainz and to found a music publishing house of international standing. |
