| BA 11556 | EUR 18.95 | 9790260108905 | The renowned Czech double bass player, composer, conductor and teacher Frantisek Hertl (1906–1973) wrote many concert and teaching pieces for his instrument. An outstanding virtuoso, he had a consummate mastery of his instrument's expressive potential and sound qualities.
These four pieces for double bass comprising a Prelude, Burlesque, Nocturne and Tarantella were composed in 1968. They have remained very popular among double bass players to the present day while being extremely challenging to play. Our edition adopts the musical text from the Supraphon edition of 1969. The double bass part and the Foreword have been revised by Stefan Schafer, the solo double bassist of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra.

It is of additional interest insofar as it draws attention to a series of pieces dating from his earliest creative period. The young composer's progress can thus be followed, from his student work at the "Ecole de musique classique et religieuse" to the earliest masterpieces for piano born between 1875 and 1880.
Beside the first versions of the 3rd "Romance" and two "Pieces breves", the appendices to the present volume include the interesting piano solo version of the "Pavane" doubtlessly penned by the composer, as well as the cadenzas to piano concertos by Beethoven and Mozart which he wrote for his students and, later, for the pianist Marguerite Hasselmans. These cadenzas' originality has aroused the interest of pianists again and again. | | |

It was to become one of the most popular British musical stage works of the century, and by 1791 it had also gained international acclaim. The question of why this pastiche comic opera was able to develop this special attraction can be described in terms of fashion and tradition. By bringing stylistically sophisticated compositions by various well-known composers into the traditional "Ballad Opera", the theatre makers succeeded in renewing traditional ways of producing and performing playhouse entertainment.
The music of "Love in a Village" stems from four sources: Vocal music from the amusement gardens, Italian opera arias from the 1750s and 1760s, theatrical or occasional music and folk melodies. Love in a Village" thus further developed the methods first used by "Ballad Opera" to create a comic opera from a sentimental plot and pre-existent vocal compositions. | | |
