By KELLY P. KISSEL East Baton Rouge will continue twice-a-week garbage pickups, but it'll cost you. The Metro Council last night finalized a plan to maintain current service levels, but fees will go up about 50 percent. The council had considered dropping back to once-a-week service, but members said they heard from too many constituents who said they need the garbage taken out twice each week. People on fixed incomes or in small households told council members that having garbage trucks pass by once a week would have been fine. In response to the 2016 floods, parish leaders have tightened development rules. New subdivisions and similar developments will have to meet higher anti-flood standards under guidelines adopted after a five-year study. The review included the creation of a detailed map and then overlaying it with rainfall estimates more in line with what south Louisiana is seeing these days. Recent weather events have been more intense, raising the flooding risk. A Broadmoor High School student was shot on his way to school Wednesday. Police say they had a good lead on a suspect because they had been investigating the hold-up of another Broadmoor student in the past month. Police say the suspect is a juvenile who was seeking people to rob. |
