The paper is a collaboration between the MATHDES group at BCAM and the department of mathematics at the University of West Bohemia (UWB). The authors are Juan Zaragoza Chichell (PhD at BCAM), Alena Rečková (Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of West Bohemia), Michal Bizzarri (Assoc. Prof. at UWB) and Michael Bartoň (Group Leader. Ikerbasque Research Associate at BCAM). The paper was published in Computer-Aided Design (CAD, Elsevier) in August 2024. The SPM is a key event and an international conference series organized annually with the support of the Solid Modeling Association. The Best Paper Award was presented during the conference held under the auspices of the SPM community, showcasing groundbreaking advancements in computational design and modeling. Out of 48 submissions, only 13 were selected for presentation at the conference and subsequent publication in a special issue of Computer-Aided Design (CAD).

On 4 November, Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao hosted the Global Innovation Day 2024, organized by Innobasque. This is a day in which agents of the Basque innovation ecosystem, students and representatives from different social and business fields analysed the present and future of Artificial Intelligence in this annual meeting organised by Innobasque. José Antonio Lozano, scientific director of BCAM, was interviewed to address the impact of generative artificial intelligence in today's society. On the other hand, BCAM researchers Verónica Álvarez and Onintze Zaballa brought mathematical innovation to groups of university and vocational training students, a total of 125 students from all over the Basque Country.

Claudiu Mindrila, studied Mathematics in University of Bucharest (Romania), and then a master’s degree in Mathematics in the University of Bonn (Germany. His interests are Partial differential equations (existence, uniqueness, regularity of weak solutions), Fluid dynamics: fluid-structure interactions, (in)compressible (non-) Newtonian flows and Harmonic analysis methods in analysis of PDEs. He currently works as a Research Technicia (postdoc position) at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) in the Applied Analysis research group (AA). His thesis, titled 'Time-periodic weak solutions for fluid-structure interactions' is under the supervision of Dr. Sebastian Schwarzacher (Charles University).

BCAM's researchers and administrative staff volunteered in the November campaign participating in the Great Food Collection 2024 organized by the Bizkaia Food Bank. During the days of the campaign (22nd and 23rd of November), members of the center joined as volunteers in different supermarkets in Bizkaia, helping to collect non-perishable food for families in vulnerable situations.

This month, more than 120 students of 3rd ESO of the Escolapios school visited BCAM to attend the talk “The powers of the Wizard Shazam: AI, music and floating wind energy”, given by Vincenzo Nava, researcher at BCAM and Tecnalia. In addition, BCAM participated in the First Lego League with interactive activities on marine geology and sustainable energy, also by Vincenzo Nava, with the collaboration of Nestor Vegas and Lidia Rodríguez researchers of the Department of Geology of the UPV/EHU. These proposals are part of the European project MSCA ORE4CITIZENS, which seeks to bring research in marine renewable energies closer to society. On the other hand, students from Beasain BHI and Colegio Vizcaya visited the center to learn about our work and different applications of mathematics in health, sports or renewable energies, guided by BCAM researchers (Leire Garmendia, Mikel Pérez, Onintze Zaballa and Imanol Gago).

BCAM was part of Fernando García participated on behalf of BCAM in the conference 'Transforming Intelligence in Cities', organized by Bilbao Urban Cities and Design Fernando García participated on behalf of BCAM in the conference ‘Transforming Intelligence in Cities’, organised by Bilbao Urban Cities and Design, to commemorate World Cities Day. Bilbao Urban & Cities Design & Cities brought together at BBK Kuna professionals from different areas such as urban planning, architecture, engineering, environment, energy efficiency or mobility, strongly committed to developing more sustainable and efficient urban models. Luca Fanelli was one of the speakers at the past Zientzia Astea His intervention, under the title “Debussy: mathematical innovation and musical revolution”, was a commented concert of the repertoire of the first volume of C. Debussy's Preludes. He addressed the fascinating intersection between mathematics and music, taking as an example the work of the mentioned musician. |
