Behind Michigan’s new push to fight homelessness before it begins |
Community groups like Neighborhoods Inc. are working to help low-income residents avoid homelessness in times of need. Its newest weapon in the fight? Funding through a $4 million statewide pilot program, known as shelter diversion. It offers flexibility by providing struggling people with various types of financial aid — including motel vouchers, bus tickets or even paying to help them get their driver’s license. Support: The Michigan State Housing Development Authority, MSHDA, launched a $10 million employer-assisted housing fund Monday, Feb. 24 for businesses that plan to invest in housing for workers. Employers can tap into the fund through various approaches like developing housing, donating land or offering down payment assistance to staff. Shut down: In the rolling hills of Leelanau County near the crystal waters of Glen Lake, a school district saw a problem: teachers often struggle to afford living in Michigan’s most expensive housing market. Then in 2023, an idea emerged. Could Glen Lake Community Schools use its 140 acres of forestland for housing? Here’s why it didn’t. |

Michigan’s week ahead: Warm with lots of snow melting, little snow falling |
Nothing crazy: This week won’t be super active in the world of Michigan weather. We will have quite a bit of warming to start the week and a turn toward winter from Thursday into the weekend. What are those little black specks jumping on top of the snow? Welcome to snow flea season. These primitive little bugs, commonly known as springtails, aren’t really fleas at all, so don’t worry if you see them hopping around in the snow in your yard or when you’re walking on a trail. For the last couple of months, users on TikTok and other social media platforms have been sharing “breaking news” of upcoming Planet Parades visible in our night sky. But is this really even a thing? Well, kind of. But, not really. Let’s explain. |

Hundreds of X-country skiers to race in U.P.’s Great Bear Chase |
In Calumet: This late-season cross-country skiing event is gearing up to welcome hundreds of snow enthusiasts to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Great Bear Chase has been showcasing the Keweenaw Peninsula’s abundance of snow since 1981. This year is a good example with 239.25 inches of snow recorded and 38 inches piled on the ground as of Feb. 22, according to data from neighboring Keweenaw County. Celebrity appearance: There will be some special guests on hand when the 42nd Michigan Horse Expo takes place in 2025. Organizers of the three-day celebration announced this week that Jake Ream, a horse trainer and actor who appears in the hit TV show “Yellowstone,” will be on hand, as will actors Dawn Olivieri and Danielle Vasinova. To know: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is postponing its Maple Sugaring Days. Both the event and the accompanying candlelight hike are being moved to March 22. The event takes place in Sleeping Bear's historic district and features sap boiling demos and delicious maple syrup. |
