Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Protecting Americans' Tax Dollars The Biden administration recently proposed the Income Driven Repayment (IDR) rule, which would reduce the amount of student loan debt borrowers have to pay back by 40 percent and cost tax-payers up to $1 trillion. I joined Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.), Representative Virginia Foxx (N.C.-05), along with 66 other lawmakers in calling on Biden’s Department of Education to rescind their reckless student loan scheme. This is a regressive policy that will continue to crush American families suffering from record inflation. Read our letter to the Department of Education here. Believing in a Stronger America Watch my full interview here! This week, I joined Fox News’ America Reports to encourage our country to come together and celebrate the values that make us the greatest nation in the world. As a kid growing up in poverty, this country afforded me an opportunity to live the American dream and, despite our challenges, I am confident that we can continue to build opportunities for the next generation. Fighting for Quality Education During President Biden’s State of the Union address, he missed a golden opportunity to share a plan that actually creates educational opportunity for all kids around the nation. I recently wrote an op-ed for the New York Post detailing how the president could actually invest in our nation’s children and their education. I discussed the devastating failures within our nation’s education system and called on Democrats to put parents, students, and families first. I will continue to fight to ensure that kids trapped in failing and underperforming schools gain an opportunity to live out their American Dream. Read the full op-ed here. Celebrating Black Achievements As we commemorate Black History Month, my prayer for our country is that we celebrate the past and present contributions of Black Americans, while fostering opportunity for ourselves and all who follow in our footsteps. This week, the Senate unanimously passed my resolution that I cosponsored with Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) celebrating Black History Month and the contributions made by Black Americans’ economic, educational, political, artistic, athletic, literary, scientific, and technological advancements. Embracing the Entrepreneurial Spirit of America As a former small business owner, I know that hard work, innovation, and diverse ideas create opportunities for communities to flourish. Small business owners make up over 44% of our economic activity. I believe it is necessary we continue to foster pro-growth economic policies that encourage the success of these businesses. This week, my resolution commemorating National Entrepreneurship Week, which I introduced alongside Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), unanimously passed the Senate. I am always proud to support American small business owners, the engine of job creation, and I look forward to continuing to work with Senator Klobuchar this Congress as co-chair of the Senate’s bipartisan Entrepreneurship Caucus. Congratulations to Eastside High for winning their 8th straight state title! This record-breaking achievement is an amazing testament to the dedication and hard work of the coaches and student athletes. I know this tradition of excellence will continue for generations to come. Read more about this story here! Sincerely, |
