Beware these seven surprises for new managers! |
There are many challenges that you can face as a manager or leader, no matter how prepared you may feel. Many of them can appear out of the blue and catch you off guard!
Michael Porter, Jay Lorsch and Nitin Nohria identified seven such pitfalls in their 2004 article for Harvard Business Review, “Seven Surprises for New CEOs.” Their observations were aimed at senior leaders, but they are just as relevant today to those taking their first steps on the management and leadership ladder.
So what seven perils lie in wait for the unwary manager?
1. You can’t do it all! Accept that you cannot oversee every detail. Shift focus from doing to enabling others to do, using effective delegation, and prioritizing managerial tasks over operational ones.
2. Don’t be a bottleneck. Avoid creating a dependency on you. Cultivate an environment of trust and encourage independent decision-making.
You can read all the 7 points in our article, Seven Surprises for New Managers.
Mind Tools now has the option for a 7 day free trial with our monthly membership OR until end of January, we're offering 20% off Annual memberships.
