 February 24, 2021  President Joe Biden made big promises on immigration during his campaign. But after a month in office, there are already signs that he may have overpromised. And on Monday, reports that the administration re-opened a Trump-era facility to hold unaccompanied minors made a lot of people upset.
"The last opened and first closed of the Trump administration’s overflow facilities for minors, it lacks many of the issues at other centers," Hayes Brown writes. "It’s run by a nonprofit that focuses on providing emergency services rather than a for-profit prison company like many adult detention centers. It wasn't one of the HHS sites where alleged incidents of sexual abuse against unaccompanied minors occurred."
"But let's not pretend that it's a great situation for the teens there or those who will likely join them in the coming days and weeks. Despite a colorful trailer welcoming the newcomers and the promise of a well-run facility, it’s still a fenced-in camp in the middle of nowhere, which generally doesn’t scream 'nurturing home,'" Brown writes.
