BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer A bill to repeal a law requiring employers to give child workers lunch breaks passed a Louisiana House committee on Thursday, part of a push by Republicans to remove constraints on employers and reduce aid for injured and unemployed workers. State Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, who sponsored the child labor measure, said he filed the bill in part because children want to work without having to take lunch breaks. New data shows teacher hiring in Louisiana increased by 2% in 2022-23 compared with the previous school year. The number of teachers of color grew by 2%, but just over 30% of teachers are nonwhite, compared with nearly 60% of students, according the state’s annual “Educator Workforce Snapshot."
