Crime session: More than a dozen bills backed by Gov. Jeff Landry flew through legislative committees on the second day of a special session devoted to crime, James Finn reports. Here's more about the bills, which largely seek to undo laws passed under Gov. John Bel Edwards' administration. Public defense: A bill to grant a single gubernatorial appointee control of the state's public defense system passed out of legislative committee Tuesday despite heavy criticism, Meghan Friedmann reports. Public defenders and other critics say it would give too much power to the governor. Supreme Court: A legislative panel on Tuesday also backed a bill to redraw boundaries for the state's seven Supreme Court districts and create a new majority-Black district, Tyler Bridges reports. The bill results from a settlement between the state and plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging the court's makeup. |
