Happy Friday, y’all!
Black History Month may be coming to an end, but you know the celebration continues 366 (shoutout to the leap year)!
This week, we published our final project for the month, “Black At The Ballot.” In January, Erin Evans, Phil Lewis and I traveled down to Columbia, South Carolina, known as “the Black primary,” with photographer Demetrius Freeman and audio producer Joey Horan to talk to voters and debunk some myths before the state votes on Saturday. We knew a few things to be true before going down: Black voters are often taken for granted and often seen as a monolith. We talked to more than 30 people about their beliefs, values and reservations going into the primary and found a diverse array of voters passionate about a range of issues who just wanted to be heard. We profiled 12 Black South Carolinians of different ages and backgrounds and the result is this beautiful, in-depth project. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
