For several years I was an interior designer and a member of ASID. I worked in St. Louis as a designer at Lammert's in the Clayton Design store. I also worked as a designer for Studio One Interiors in St. Louis and Metro Decorators in Allentown Pennsylvania. As well as being an artist and designer, I am also an entertainer performing in theaters, casinos and aboard cruise ships. I try to do some form of art every day, if it's not an actual painting it's a sketch of something I want to paint when back in my studio. When traveling it's not always convenient to paint. If I'm working a cruise ship or in a theater I often do small paintings in my cabin or backstage in my dressing room, but let me back up a little.... I attended Syracuse University right after getting out of the US Navy. I had theater and art in mind for a career. I felt that I had a gift for entertaining and performed with Famous Artists Theater in NY for six years. Theater work was great but it didn't pay well so I also worked for Goldberg's Furniture in Syracuse NY. I found that my artistic talents were an easy transition to design. For over 20 years interior design and art were my main careers. Theater was never far behind as I stayed in touch with performing through community theatre groups where ever I lived. I then worked on my own show with a gift I was given to perform as a mentalist. I took two years to build my show Mind Games. After two years I presented my show to an agent and it was full speed ahead from there. At this point in my life I left the brushes and paints and design behind. Several years ago I was performing with Tony Bennett in New York. I knew that Tony was a fine singer but also well a well known painter. I valued Tony's opinion on artwork and I showed him pictures of some of my work. Tony said, " Bob you're a really good artist and you need to start painting again" I'm happy I took Tony's advice as it was like returning home, I had no idea how much I missed painting. At the time I started to paint again I was performing for for several cruise lines with my show. Working for cruise lines occupied all of my winter months in Florida. This gave my partner and myself an opportunity to open an art gallery in Alexandria Bay NY, a beautiful summer resort. For 25 years we operated Riverbank Gallery. The blend of the gallery in the summer and performing in the winter was the best of both worlds. I could to paint in the summer and perform in the winter. After 25 years my performing schedule became broader and we decided that we would sell the gallery. My technique is somewhat original in the sense that I use unusual elements that give my artwork a unique texture. When I was working in Venice Italy I saw a man in his workshop repairing an ornate frame from a church. I spoke with him and he told me that he would find a duplicate of the missing piece somewhere on the frame and make a mold. He would then pour in a compound to reproduce the the piece and repair the frame like new. I was curious and asked what compound he used to form the missing piece as it was so delicate. Giovanni gave me his formula. He said it was the same that was used to cover the walls in churches to paint frescoes. When I returned home I worked on adding this element to my artwork. I used this formula to make my work unique not only in design and color but in the texture on the canvas. When you see my art in a room it changes constantly as the light in the room changes. Performing my show is still a major part of my life. I am a member of the Psychic Entertainers Association. From 2008 through 2015 I acted as a technical adviser to the hit TV show " THE MENTALIST ". I would send thoughts and ideas to producer Bruno Heller to help the writers make Simon Baker look more like a real mentalist. I still paint every day and always feel the need to keep creating. My contacts in the theater are also part of my art career as two of my paintings were rented by Warner Brothers for use on a set for the movie " Father Figures" and some of my art was seen in the TV Show " Pure Genius". I am fortunate to work with a company that rents my work to movie companies. I also work with several interior designers as galleries are becoming less and less available. The designers find that giving me pictures of a room and color swatches saves them a great deal of time in finding the exact paintings needed for a room , office or commercial project. My painting " Barcelona Nights " was just rented in Atlanta for a new TV Pilot for CBS. To see Bob at work as a performer and to see his amazing show go to his web page and watch over 30 minutes of live performances of his award winning show " MIND GAMES " www.ESPshows.com The goal for my work is to create something that will enrich peoples lives. I hope when people look at my work that their imagination kicks in and that they see beyond what is on the canvas. I want people to know the artwork on the wall is a Bob Lawson when they walk into a room without seeing my signature. I try to make my work unique and special like a famous singers voice, you know by not even checking that it is Brenda Lee or Frank Sinatra. If I can bring a little beauty into a world that is so troubled, I feel I have completed my goal. Like with my performance show, if I can make people forget about the troubles in their lives if only for 90 minutes, I have done my job. I would hope my artwork will last beyond my time here and continue to give pleasure.
