Study explores B.C.’s renewable hydrogen energy potential

A new study will enable United Kingdom-based ITM Power to examine the potential for large-scale production of renewable hydrogen in British Columbia. The study, which begins this spring, will look at the feasibility of hydrogen production and export, for energy use in Japan, California and domestically in British Columbia. If the study results are positive, ITM Power will consider building a pilot plant in B.C.

Provincial government launches two-phase review of BC Hydro

The British Columbia government has launched a two-phase review of BC Hydro in an effort to find cost savings and direction for the Crown utility. The first part of the review is expected to examine ways to save money within hydro, create new revenue streams in an effort to keep rates low and give the corporation the resources it needs to provide electricity.

Walmart Canada to invest more than $175 million to build new sustainable, state-of-the-art fulfillment centre in Surrey, British Columbia

Walmart Canada has announced plans to invest more than $175 million to build a new 300,000 square foot, high-tech, state-of-the-art fresh, frozen grocery facility in Surrey, BC, creating between 150 to 200 new, long-term jobs. In addition, 300 skilled construction and engineering roles to support the 14- to 18-month build period will be required once construction begins in early 2021. Building designers will focus on sustainability, including plans for it to be a zero-waste facility when it opens in early 2022.

TransLink rolls out new clean energy buses for Surrey

TransLink announced today that the first of 106 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses have arrived and will begin serving customers on Surrey streets this week, with full roll out of the new clean energy buses by the end of the year.

B.C. Hydro adds more vehicle charging stations across southern B.C.

BC Hydro predicts province wide electricity demand could exceed the historical record for the month of June as the first summer heat wave hits the province. On Monday, BC Hydro recorded the highest peak hourly demand – the hour customers use the most electricity – of the season. At nearly 7,300 megawatts, this represents more than a 10 per cent increase over the previous Monday.

Wind energy is now the lowest-cost option for new electricity generation in Canada

News about record-low costs tops the 2017 year-end review of wind energy in Canada. In December, a competitive electricity-supply auction in Alberta yielded the lowest-ever price paid for wind energy in Canada (weighted average of $37 / MWh) and also made wind energy the lowest-cost option for new electricity generation in the country. This came on the heels of a major U.S. study which found that wind power costs had plunged 67 percent between 2009 and 2017.
