The Bottom Line
Bowel Cancer Australia was named Best Small Charity of the Year 2019 at the national Third Sector Awards, held in Sydney on September 24th, in recognition of our contribution to the third sector in a meaningful and impactful way that produces measurable benefits.

The charity’s strong, clear and purposeful vision and mission; engagement of stakeholders through innovative and unique marketing initiatives; impactful collaborations that drive organisational purpose; and design of solutions based on system-level change were all cited as reasons why it was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the prestigious honour.

The Award highlights the big impact Bowel Cancer Australia is making, despite the organisation’s small size and limited budget when compared with comparable cancer charities.

It also serves as recognition of the collective effort – past and present – of staff and colleagues, fundraisers and donors, patients and volunteers, who have all helped contribute to Bowel Cancer Australia’s success over the years.

Providing an unbiased and objective point of reference, Third Sector and a team of judges scored hundreds of entries across multiple categories to showcase the very best in the not-for-profit sector, from health and wellbeing to advocacy. The public was then given the opportunity to show their support for nominees through an online voting process.

Recognition as Best Small Charity of the Year is testament to the consistently high standard of work and services provided by Bowel Cancer Australia and our commitment to championing what matters most to people affected by bowel cancer, across the care continuum.

Founded in 2000, Bowel Cancer Australia has become the leading community-funded bowel cancer charity, through initiatives such as Bowel Cancer Awareness MonthBowelScreen Australia – a pharmacy-based screening program, and the Big Bowel Tour.

Bowel Cancer Australia offers the only Bowel Care Nurse Helpline and the highly popular Peer-to-Peer Support Network often referred to by patients and loved ones as a ‘lifeline’.

After years of effort by successive boards, Bowel Cancer Australia established the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research at the University of Sydney in 2018, which we anticipate will be a game changer for bowel cancer research in this country.

In addition, the charity provides an unrivalled suite of patient information, publications, and resources – including the highest-ranking bowel cancer website in the country, an active online community of over 120,000 followers and the world’s first bowel cancer app.

As a 100% community funded charity, we would like to take this opportunity to express our pride and our appreciation.

With your support, we continue to make real change happen.

Thank you.

Addressing the stigma around stomas

Over 42,000 Australians live with a stoma and thousands of people undergo stoma surgery every year.

On February 26th, 2019, Geoff went in to have a colonoscopy. It revealed a 6 cm tumour in his bowel.

To allow his body to recover from the surgery, Geoff wore a stoma bag for 3 months.

Prior to having his stoma reversed, Geoff made this video to help address the stigma around stomas and to remind people to be bowel cancer aware.

Meat Free Week 2019

Big thanks to all our supporters who participated in Meat Free Week 2019 and congratulations on completing the challenge!

An annual campaign, Meat Free Week is about encouraging people to discover how easy it is to make little changes that can create a big difference.

Trying a plant-based menu for one week continues to create a great opportunity to start thinking about how much meat you eat and the impact eating too much meat may have.

The goal is that with education, awareness and the information to make informed choices, meat-eaters will consider portion sizes if including meat as part of a balanced diet during the other 51 weeks of the year.

We hope you'll join us again next year for Meat Free Week 2020!
