Neuralink shows first human brain-chip patient playing chess via thought

Neuralink wants to use its brain-computer interface to help people with severe paralysis control devices through thought. A number of other companies are working on similar technologies

Three years after Neuralink showed footage of a monkey playing Pong using signals delivered via a brain implant, the Elon Musk-backed company has shared another video, this time of a human using the same technology to play chess on a computer.

Neuralink live-streamed the remarkable demonstration on social media on Wednesday. The video shows quadriplegic Noland Arbaugh — who recently became the first human patient to have Neuralink’s device implanted in his brain — using his thoughts to control a cursor that moves the chess pieces.

Arbaugh described the first time he moved the cursor as “a wild experience,” but admitted that they’d “run into some issues” along the way. He refrained from going into detail, though he did say that no cognitive impairment has resulted from the ongoing trial ...

Toyota's $15B high-tech 'city' moves toward completion

The automaker says Woven City will endeavor to 'pilot experiments and innovations that will propel society forward'

Forbes has reported on the progress of Toyota's Woven City project, the auto giant's grand, $15 billion plan to build a 175-acre smart "city" at the foot of Japan's iconic Mount Fuji.

The automaker announced the Woven City project in 2020 and broke ground the following year. The Woven City website recently confirmed that Phase 1 of the development will be wrapped up by the end of 2024, with trials starting next year.

Toyota's prototype "city of the future" will feature a fully connected ecosystem powered by hydrogen fuel cells and serve as a home to full-time residents and researchers who will test and develop technologies in the fields of autonomy, robotics, personal mobility, smart homes, and artificial intelligence in a real-world environment.
