The Honourable Minister Qualtrough, as part of her mandate to consult with Canadians on Government of Canada Accessibility Legislation, will host a one-day National Youth Forum. The forum is scheduled to take place in Ottawa in November 2016 and will provide an opportunity for youth with disabilities, and those with considerable work or academic experience in the field, to engage in a policy discussion around proposed accessibility legislation, to connect with peers, and to celebrate youth leadership in building a more accessible Canada.
We encourage you to promote this forum through your networks to all other eligible youth who may be interested in attending. An accessible application package will be hosted on the main consultation website www.Canada.ca/Accessible-Canada in early August.

Le forum aura lieu à Ottawa, en novembre 2016, et offrira l'occasion aux jeunes handicapés et à des jeunes ayant une vaste expérience dans le domaine, acquise au fil de leur parcours professionnel ou scolaire, de participer à une discussion stratégique sur la loi proposée, de rencontrer des pairs et de célébrer le leadership qu'exercent les jeunes dans la création d'un Canada plus accessible.

A Winnipeg woman took a group of runners back in time to raise awareness about a cause close to her heart. Three years ago, Mandi Jacobson's husband David fell from a ladder at work and suffered a severe brain injury. He slipped into a coma and doctors had to perform emergency surgery on his brain. "They took out the size of a quarter of his brain, because there was so much bleeding and damage. And then he had to learn how to walk, talk, eat, everything again," she said. READ MORE

When it comes to concussions, science is taking the guesswork out of whether an athlete should sit or play after a head impact. Kerry Pavlovic, a certified athletic therapist at the Bowen Medical Group in Stoney Creek, said advance preparation can help athletes, coaches and parents spot concussion symptoms before they become permanent. Paddleboarders have a second chance at winning a gold paddle at an upcoming fundraiser. The Pihl Law Paddle for Prevention is coming back to Kelowna after testing the waters last year. The event is put on by BrainTrust Canada, a non-profit that supports those with brain injuries. A class-action lawsuit against the WWE was filed on behalf of dozens of pro wrestlers, including Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and Joseph "Road Warrior Animal" Laurinaitis. The suit alleges that the wrestlers incurred "long term neurological injuries" in the course of working for the company, while it "routinely failed to care" for them "in any medically competent or meaningful manner" and even "fraudulently misrepresented and concealed" the nature and extent of those injuries. Concussion injuries have significantly increased in the general population, predominantly driven by a substantial rise among adolescents, according to study findings presented at the annual meeting of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. "Our team looked at the administrative health records of more than 8.8 million members of a large private payer insurance group and noted that 32 per cent of the individuals diagnosed with concussion were between the ages of 10 to 19 years old with the largest increase in incidence between 2007 and 2014 in that age group," Alan L. Zhang, MD, associate professor of the orthopedic department at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, said. READ MORE
