Only in Florida: School mascot makes a real-life appearance A school named Everglades Elementary would obviously have a gator as a mascot. But nobody expected a real-life alligator to show up one day while school was in session. The reptile appeared on the school’s playground on Nov. 4 and posed a frightening danger to students in attendance. The local sheriff’s office thankfully arrived on time and safely captured the gator without harming it. It was eventually released into the nearby Nubbin Slough River, but not before officers nicknamed it Everglades after the school. We’re happy that everybody, human and reptile, is safe and sound.
