Nippon Steel finalized its nearly $14.2 billion takeover of U.S. Steel on Thursday after an extended political debate over the deal.
The transaction, which was first proposed in December 2023, retains U.S. Steel’s headquarters in Pittsburgh and makes the famed steelmaker a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japan-based company.
The news comes days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order approving the deal. As part of the acquisition, the federal government will have approval over a variety of decisions related to the company’s operations.
