On the surface, it seems like a slow time for LSU football. The Tigers don't report for preseason camp until Wednesday, and Saturday marks 36 days until the season opener against Florida State in the Caesars Superdome. More, as they say, on that later. Looks, as they also say, can be deceiving. It's been a super busy July for the Tigers on the recruiting front. Friday, Brian Kelly and his staff picked up their 11th commitment in July and 17th overall for the 2022-23 recruiting cycle, keeping four-star St. Augustine tackle Tyree "The Animal" Adams (his nickname, per his Twitter account) in "The Boot" to quote said Twitter account. Adams' pledge moves LSU to No. 10 in the 247Sports.com composite recruiting rankings. Speaking of big additions ... BASEBALL Jay Johnson's Tigers continue to hit the transfer portal hard, landing a top-flight pitcher from Air Force (Landing? Top flight? Never mind, it was late when I wrote this), right-hander Paul Skenes. He can also hit with power, too. FOOTBALL My column in the wake of Kelly's Rotary Club appearance Wednesday at Tiger Stadium, which showed he's focused on the important stuff and not on the bread pudding for dessert (which was delicious). VOLLEYBALL Congratulations to former LSU volleyball coach Fran Flory, who was named Friday to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame. Flory retired in 2021 after 405 wins in 24 years coaching the Tigers (she had another 110 wins at SLU, Kentucky and Wittenburg). BOOK EXCERPT Cole Tracy spent only one season at LSU but it was a memorable one, earning him our nod as the program's best No. 36 ever. That's a wrap, folks. Have a great weekend. Scott Rabalais |
