Disney just reinvented the VR treadmill, and it looks amazing

VR really needs something like this – to stop from you crashing into things |
Disney has revealed what seems like an exciting breakthrough to reinvent movement in VR. The HoloTile is an omnidirectional, multiplayer treadmill floor that could solve a huge problem with VR gaming and the metaverse: connecting body movement to the virtual world.
Existing solutions are clunky, either opting for a tethered treadmill or going free-roam in large rooms, where users risk colliding with other players or walls.
According to a video, Disney’s solution is unique and comes in the form of what looks like small balls that rotate to match your foot movement. There’s no need for a tether, and more than one person can use the expandable HoloTile VR treadmill. It seems like a perfect solution, though it’s still a work in progress ... |

Check your iPhone right now for an important security update
|
iOS 17.3 is rolling out to iPhones right now, and it has an important new security feature that you'll definitely want |
iPhone owners should update their device to iOS 17.3 to get an important new security feature called Stolen Device Protection.
Stolen Device Protection makes it harder for thieves to access your iPhone if it’s lost or stolen with its passcode known.
Setup is simple. After updating to iOS 17.3, open the Settings app and select Face ID & Passcode. Confirm your identity then scroll down to the section titled Stolen Device Protection and select Turn On Protection. That’s it.
After that, if your iPhone detects that it’s in an unusual location, it’ll require Face ID (or Touch ID) authentication if someone is trying to access your saved passwords. Furthermore, any attempts to change “sensitive settings” (such as your Apple ID password) are hit with a security delay ... |

I used a new type of smartphone that could replace Android

'Android and iOS are the two choices you have when you buy a smartphone today. But what if there was a third one? Enter Apostrophy OS'
|
We’ve seen other platforms come and go over the years, from Windows Phone to Palm OS, but Android and iOS are still your two sole choices.
One of the last things I saw at CES 2024 was a smartphone operating system that’s trying to become a third option. It’s called Apostrophy OS (also referred to as AphyOS), and I got to play around with it while also chatting with Apostrophy CEO Steve Cistulli to learn about the could-be Android and iOS alternative.
In the company’s own words, Apostrophy OS is “a bespoke OS-level implementation integrated, in partnership, with an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) smartphone.” In simpler terms, it’s an operating system that smartphone manufacturers can license and use on their devices — just like Android ... |

Is this what an Apple smart ring could look like?
|
Here's a new concept that might convince you that the time has come for an Apple smart ring to find its way on the market. Will it happen?
|
Forget the Apple Vision Pro. What many users really might want to see is an Apple smart ring. A new concept shows what one of these first-generation wearables could look like.
There have been long-running rumors about Apple releasing a smart ring that would compete with the Oura Ring and the recently confirmed Samsung Galaxy Ring. If Apple were to release such a device, it would likely track various health metrics to help users understand their sleep patterns, activity levels, and overall health. Essentially, it would be like an Apple Watch for your finger.
Designer Jonas Daehnert has come up with a new concept (above) for an Apple Ring based on known Apple patents. He posted a series of images on Inside-sim.de and also on social media ... |
