The Freedom Farmers Market Brings Together Black Farmers and Foods | Over the last 20 years, Dr. Gail P. Myers has been lecturing, researching, teaching, writing and documenting stories of African American farmers, sharecroppers, and gardeners. In 2013, Dr. Myers founded Farms to Grow, a nonprofit organization that operates the Freedom Farmers Market in Oakland, to help fill the growing gap of Black farmers and traditional legacy foods, working in partnership with farmers, business owners, and food makers. Dr. Gail P. Myers talked with CUESA about what inspired the Freedom Farmers Market and how it has become an important gathering place for seasoned and aspiring Black farmers. | |
| Volunteer of the Month: Marie Wood | Since taking a CUESA cooking class 10 years ago, veteran volunteer Marie Wood has supported our panel discussions, farm tours, cooking demonstrations, and cocktail events. After a pandemic break, she returned in 2021 to help market shoppers at Veggie Valet. She says, “Even when I wasn’t directly volunteering, I always supported the markets however I could. So glad to be back again!” | |
| Reminder: Changes to Veggie Valet and Passenger Loading | Due to changes to the Embarcadero bike lane, passenger and Veggie Valet loading is now to the left of the bike lane, rather than directly curbside. Veggie Valet shoppers should pull into the front area of the south loading zone, and follow the signs and staff who will be there to assist and guide you. When crossing the two-way bike lane on foot, please be safe and look both ways. Thank you! | |
