US users will be the first to receive access to the cryptocurrency services, with expansion into other countries and their Venmo service in 2021. PayPal hope that the service will assist customers in getting used to virtual currencies, in preparation for new currencies such as those developed by central banks. BitMEX has moved to speed up its know-your-customer (KYC) program, just weeks after charged by the US government for violations related to anti-money laundering laws. Customers now must verify their identities before November 5th, a full quarter of a year earlier than the original deadline for February 2021. The Bahamas have officially launched their central bank digital currency (CBDC), the "Sand Dollar", making it one of the first countries to launch a CBDC. The currency is a digital version of their Bahamian Dollar and will be used for domestic transactions. Citizens can now set up accounts and begin transacting in the Sand Dollar, with six financial institutions authorized for the project. |
