Hampden-area school board members saw firsthand what school will look like this fall

  • Hampden Academy’s second-floor hallways were lined with desks and chairs, neatly stacked outside the classrooms from which they had been removed. School officials in masks walked single-file through the hallways, into classrooms with the few remaining desks spaced 3 or 6 feet apart from each other. It was all part of a preview of what school will look like this fall.
Small cruise line turned away from Bar Harbor seeks to make stops in Bucksport

  • No cruise ships have carried passengers in Maine this year, and the industry has effectively ground to a halt worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic because of concerns over how the disease can spread among the tight quarters of passenger ships. But American Cruise Lines has been seeking permission to run smaller cruises.
Aroostook man serving life for pot smuggling seeks release due to health problems
  • Michael Pelletier was indicted in 2006 by a federal grand jury along with five others in connection with the drug smuggling ring that stretched from Canada to southern Maine. He's now arguing that his health has declined dramatically while incarcerated at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Flying instructor forced to make emergency landing in Aroostook County clearing

  • A flying instructor and student were forced to make an emergency landing in a clearing in Aroostook County when the small airplane’s engine cut out on Wednesday, state police said.

Fate of referendum challenging CMP's powerline project rests in Maine supreme court's hands
  • Maine’s high court wrestled on Wednesday with arguments in a lawsuit aiming to stop a November vote on a question aiming to kill Central Maine Power’s controversial hydropower corridor proposal that could have major implications for the project’s path. Judges questioned why the courts should take away people’s right to vote on a measure aiming to compel the Legislature to act while probing how Secretary of State Matt Dunlap’s office could allow the question to go forward even if he thought it was unconstitutional.
