Plus, state lawmakers may ask Utah's public colleges to tighten their belts a notch — or two or three.

🌅 Good morning!

Here are four stories I especially enjoyed reading from our Deseret News writers.

1. Lois Collins reported on a story of a talented quilter and a group of quilters who finished her final quilt after her death. This one is both inspiring and cathartic.

2. Jennifer Graham shared her experience adopting their family dog, Jason, into their home and explains how every pet changes a family for the better. I love picturing a dog named Jason.

3. Emma Pitts reported on how fear of backlash causes young voters to stay silent about their voting choices. A recent poll showed that nearly half (48%) of Gen Z voters lied to people close to them regarding their vote.

4. Jay Drew wrote about how BYU kicker Will Ferrin was able to stay cool, calm and collected in order to kick the game-winning 44-yard field goal to beat Utah 22-21 in the rivalry game Saturday night.

Tell me: What stories have you especially enjoyed reading lately?

Utah’s public colleges may face budget cuts in 2025

Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz is pushing for budget cuts and other reforms at public colleges and universities in the state, in the hopes of saving the state money and making college more accessible to more students.

So far, higher ed administrators haven’t publicly discussed the possible budget cuts, instead saying they’re still having discussions with state lawmakers.

One factor he points to in order to address the budget is cost-per-student administrative costs, which have increased at the following rate over the past nine years:

  • 112% — University of Utah
  • 143% — Salt Lake Community College
  • 20% — Southern Utah University

“So we would maybe look at a higher (subsidy cut) percentage for some schools and a lower percentage number for others,” he said.

Will students be left footing the bill by increasing tuition costs to recover money lost to slashed legislative subsidies?

"Not while I'm here," Schultz said.

Diljeet Taylor and the power of believing

The phrase "I believe in you" has become the cornerstone of BYU cross country coach Diljeet Taylor's coaching, and it's making a difference in the lives of the newly crowned back-to-back Big 12 champions.

“You can change the trajectory of someone’s life by believing in them. I believe that because someone did that for me, and that’s really the kind of coach I want to be. I want to stay true to that, and I know performances will come if you build the people,” Taylor said.

Here are three more inspiring quotes from Krysyan Edler's interview with Taylor.

  • “If you believe in someone, but you never tell them, they don’t get the benefit of it, of that belief,” she said.
  • “Being on the journey with them, focusing on the process, making sure that they understand and they hear those words from me, and as they try to chase these big goals and chase these dreams that they really feel like they’re not doing it alone," she said. "Because when you believe in someone, you invest in them, and so then that becomes not a one-person goal. It becomes our goal.”
  • “That’s why I talk a lot about Christlike coaching because ultimately, the greatest coach we all have is God, and he sees us for not where we’re at but the potential of who we can become," she said. "It’s the same thing I do with my athletes. I don’t see them for where they’re at but in the potential that they have for who they can become in sport and in life.”
