Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
CNN's Elle Reeve

CNN correspondent Elle Reeve confronted an election-denying “poll watcher” and got a look at training documents used to instruct the army of Trump supporters being deployed to the polls.

Reeve gave the report on Friday morning’s edition of CNN This Morning, during which anchors Don Lemon, Kaitlan Collins, and Poppy Harlow were visibly startled when Reeve’s confronted fact-resistant trainee John Child with a little thing called “Google.”

"Generally, it’s a good thing when more people get engaged in their local government, but some of this engagement is motivated by lies," Reeve said, narrating the report.

The video then showed Child casting doubt on mail-in ballots, saying, "That’s where the big issue was in 2020; because in Pennsylvania, there were 1.8 million mail-in ballots that went out -- 2 1/2 million come back. There’s a question, maybe?"

Reeve challenged Child's baseless claim, asking him if they could "Google it."

Googling the theory, of course, proved Child incorrect, as Reeve pulled up an A.P. assessment that confirmed more than three million Pennsylvania voters requested to vote by mail in the weeks leading up to the November 2020 election.

Reeve also gained access to training material given to Delaware Country conservatives who have tasked themselves with watching the polls.

"It casts an enormous cloud of suspicion over the vote without any proof," she said of the documents.

Props to Reeves for highlighting the real effects of Donald Trump's election fraud conspiracy theories.

She not only spoke to a "poll watcher," but also gained access to training documents, confirming, "They cast a cloud of suspicion over the vote without any proof."

MEDIA LOSER:
Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy

The defamation lawsuit that Barstool Sports President Dave Portnoy filed against Insider has been dismissed, ending a year-long saga of litigation over two articles that made sexual misconduct allegations regarding his relationships with multiple young women.

Portnoy’s own admissions in the complaint were a big part of why his case failed.

The dispute began with a Nov. 4, 2021 article by Insider’s Julia Black headlined “‘I was literally screaming in pain’: Young women say they met Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy for sex and it turned violent and humiliating.”

One woman identified by the pseudonym “Madison” in the article said that Portnoy pulled out his cell phone to film her without her permission and treated her as “just a human sex doll,” describing their encounter as “so rough I felt like I was being raped.”

Portnoy had denied the claims but more women came forward in a second Insider article published on Feb. 3, 2022 and bylined by Black and Melkorka Licea.

Portnoy denied those allegations as well and filed a Feb. 7 complaint against Insider, the two reporters, and Insider’s CEO Henry Blodget and editor-in-chief Nicholas Carlson.

On Monday, Chief Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss, as Portnoy could not prove the statements were false or that they were made with “actual malice."

More bad news for Portnoy,as Saylor also rejected a secondary claim the Barstool president made for invasion of privacy.

Saylor ultimately determined Portnoy showcased a “narrow view of newsworthiness," noting that “[i]ssues of consent and power imbalance in sexual relationships are very much matters of current public concern."
