Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Greg Gutfeld

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld seems to be on everyone's minds these days, and that's largely thanks to the ratings success of his late night show.

In 2022, Gutfeld! averaged 2.04 million viewers a night, reaching a total audience big enough to beat Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel. The Fox News funnyman, however, fell short of CBS late night titan Stephen Colbert's numbers.Gutfeld did manage to beat Colbert in total viewers for a week in& August.

His series has mainly thrived by tackling the news of the day from a conservative viewpoint while also having the added benefit of airing at an earlier timeslot than its late-night competition.

According to a new report, CNN head Chris Licht is looking to host a show that offers a “nontraditional version of the news" in an effort to continue shaking up the network.

Because Licht is reportedly eyeing names like Trevor Noah and Jon Stewart, pundits and hosts, including Gutfeld himself, have theorized that CNN is looking to emulate Fox News' late night success.

“Turns out thanks to the smashing success of this show, which happened because of our awesome fans and my razor wit and my washboard abs, other networks now want a hit comedy show of their own,” Gutfeld said on Tuesday night.

While not entirely true, the show's massive ratings success deserves some props.

MEDIA LOSER:
Outnumbered

The hosts of Fox News show Outnumbered have coveredPresident Joe Biden's classified documents controversy by lamentingthat the FBI raided Donald Trump to retrieve documents, but not Biden.

Of course, they memory-holed the fact that Trump falsely claimed he did not have classified documents in his possession. His legal team also made a false statement to law enforcement authorities.

On Jan. 10th's edition of the show, Harris Faulkner questionedwhy Biden was not raided, while Emily Compagno ripped into the “apologist media” for noting the differences between this case and Trump's.

What no one pointed out is that the Mar-a-Lago raid occurred after Trump spent months resisting subpoenaed demands to return the hundreds of classified documents he improperly took when he left office.

Fox News host Todd Pirro joined Wednesday's Outnumber to peddle the same narrative, directly comparing Trump and Biden's document controversies to question to FBI's response.

Again, nobody highlighted the clear difference between the cases. While Biden's lawyers alerted the DOJ to the existence of the documents and voluntarily handed them over, while the National Archives referred the issue with Trump to the DOJ after noticing missing documents.
