Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
MSNBC's Steve Kornacki

With the midterms roughly eight days away, it's officially Steve Kornacki season.

The famed data journalist is having quite the start to the week. Washington Post Magazine praised him as "MSNBC's data maven" and an election night "beacon" on the same day as the six-episode drop of his new podcast “The Revolution with Steve Kornacki.”

The profile, written by Anna Peele, applauded his election coverage -- also noting his "improbable turn as a sex symbol."

Kornacki's coverage has already started with a special live hour of The Kornacki Countdown, which on Monday showed the journalist dissecting the polling in critical races with the U.S. Capitol as his background.

While people look to Kornacki for election answers, part of his successful coverage stems from his understanding that elections are unpredictable -- something he consistently relays on air.

He ditches his feelings on the candidates, unlike many others, and pretends "an election is a horse race even when it no longer is."

His commitment to being as accurate and clear as possible -- which is already evident in his coverage of the 2022 midterm elections -- has continued to mark him as “a beacon for those who turn on MSNBC on election night."

MEDIA LOSER:
Donald Trump Jr.

Donald Trump Jr. thought it funny to mock the violent attack on Paul Pelosi with a pair of tasteless (now-deleted) social media posts.

Pelosi was attacked in his home by a man wielding a hammer, suspected to be 42-yeard-old David DePape, who reportedly entered looking for Pelosi’s wife, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). DePape was charged in federal court with assault and attempted kidnapping. Meanwhile, Pelosi remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery.

On the eve of Halloween, Trump Jr. quote tweeted an image of men’s briefs and a hammer that read, “Got my Paul Pelosi Halloween costume ready.”

On Monday morning, Trump Jr. posted a South Park-inspired meme, which depicted two men in a sexual position while one held a hammer.

While disgusting, Trump Jr.'s tweets were not very accurate (or original).

Both were references to conspiracy theories based on initial reporting that turned out to be false. One early account claimed DePape was in his underwear during the attack. Others fueled rumors that the incident was prompted by some type of lovers’ quarrel while the speaker was away.

According to an FBI affidavit, DePape confessed his actions were politically motivated, which makes Trump Jr.'s costume idea even more pathetic.
