Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
News UK's Rebekah Brooks

Rebekah Brooks, CEO of News Corp unit News UK, is reportedly being tapped to run the Murdoch media empire.

According tothe Daily Beast's Lachlan Cartwright, almost a decade after Rupert Murdoch split his company into two separate and publicly-traded entities, Fox Corp and News Corp, he wants the band back together under Brooks' leadership.

Murdoch reportedly views the merger as a form of swan song, with Brooks now set to take over for Robert Thomson, the current CEO of News Corp. Thomson is expected to step aside following the merger.

Brooks, currently the CEO of News UK, returned to the Murdoch empire in 2015 after resigning from her top position at News International over the 2011 News of the World phone hacking scandal. Brooks was criminally tried for illegal eavesdropping and found not guilty.

The scandal sparked doubt that Brooks, once the youngest person ever to edit a national British newspaper, would become the media star she was expected to.

Brooks has now officially proven that even those who have been arrested and questioned by police investigating phone hacking can still make it in media. That's a pretty big win.

MEDIA LOSER:
Fox News' Tucker Carlson

Tucker Carlson baselessly claimed Brazil’s presidential election was rigged and validated rioters who stormed government buildings in the capital city.

Proclaiming election fraud over President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's win in October, scores of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in Brasilia on Sunday, reminding observers of the 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

On Monday, Carlson, who also conducted a softball interview with Bolsonaro in June, told his audience unequivocally that Brazil’s election was “very clearly” stolen and that Lula is a "convicted criminal."

Carlson was alluding to the fact that Lula, who was president from 2003 to 2011, was convicted of corruption.

However, Brazil’s high court annulled the convictions, which Lula said were politically motivated.

Carlson then referred to those who stormed government buildings as mere “protestors" despite violent clashes with police and significant acts of destruction and vandalism.

Shamelessly reporting Brazil's "democracy has been hijacked" (without providing any evidence), is not only completely void of integrity, but is also just dangerous and widely irresponsible.
