Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
CNN's Jake Tapper

A stunned Jake Tapper destroyed Republicans who joked about and spread “insane offensive and false conspiracy theories” regarding the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi.

David DePape confessed to breaking into the Pelosi’s San Francisco home early Friday morning and violently attacking Paul while asking for the speaker’s whereabouts. While some Republicans have denounced the attack, others have joked and/or promoted lies about it.

On Monday night’s edition of CNN Tonight with Jake Tapper, the host kicked off his show with a blistering commentary, taking the latter group to task for "spreading insane offensive and false conspiracy theories."

“What is wrong with these people?” he exclaimed.

Tapper specifically hit at Donald Trump Jr. for promoting "the deranged smear that Paul Pelosi, and the attacker, the man, who hit him in the head, with a hammer, were in a sexual relationship."

"It’s hard to fathom the kind of mind that hears of a tragedy, like what happened to 82-year-old Paul Pelosi, and decides to traffic in this filth," Tapper said, noting that Trump Jr. "is hardly alone" with his reaction to the attack.

Tapper went on to condemn former Republican congressman Devin Nunes and Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA)for cracking similar jokes about the attack on Twitter.

Props to the host for not only calling out the "inhumane" reaction from multiple conservatives, but also consistently clarifying that the theories being spread are completely baseless.

MEDIA LOSER:
Fox News' Greg Gutfeld

Greg Gutfeld ridiculed a female colleague for "getting too emotional" about the attack on Paul Pelosi ... only to lose his mind about the topic later that day.

On Monday's The Five, Gutfeld, Jessica Tarlov, and their fellow co-hosts discussed a now-deleted tweet from Elon Musk, which promoted the conspiracy theory that Pelosi was involved in some sort of relationship with his alleged attacker David DePape. According to an FBI affidavit, DePape has since confessed his actions were politically motivated.

“It’s not a joke,” Tarlov snapped after Gutfeld argued the Musk tweet meant to “troll” Clinton.

Gutfeld went on to accuse Tarlov of "getting too emotional about this," prompting her to say, "Just because I’m at a higher pitch than you doesn’t mean I’m more emotional than you."

DePape struck Pelosi, 82, with a hammer and fractured his skull, according to the criminal complaint -- which is certainly no joke.

Gutfeld not only called a female co-worker "too emotional" on air, but also failed to follow his own advice mere hours later by screaming into the camera about that very topic on Monday's edition of Gutfeld!

The eponymous host went apoplectic over the broader media’s reaction to the attack.

He suggested Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan "delete" her brain after sheasked a Republican guest why the party doesn’t pull ads targeting Pelosi for the time being. Gutfeld later implied Late Show host Stephen Colbert is a "f*cking idiot."

Hmm, sounds pretty -- dare I say -- emotional to me.
